RNC chair says third-party bid would be 'suicide mission' for U.S

The head of the Republican National Committee denounced efforts to draft an independent candidate to run against Donald Trump as a "suicide mission" that could "wreck" the United States for generations.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus did not mince words as he urged party figures laying the groundwork for a third-party bid to suspend their work.

"They can try to hijack another party and get on the ballot, but, look, it's a suicide mission for our country because what it means is that you're throwing down not just eight years of the White House but potentially 100 years on the Supreme Court and wrecking this country for many generations," Priebus said on "Fox News Sunday."

Glad he spoke up. I think he is totally correct and hope people will listen.

But I think those who are pushing third party don't care about party or country. Willingly or out of total stupidity, they are doing Hillary's work for her. She and the Dems are the only beneficiaries of a conservative third party run: split the Republican vote and get Hillary elected president.

Well, at least he has two working brain cells.

The open borders/amnesty wing of the GOP will try to undermine Trump.
They can’t let us elect anyone who stops the Cheap Labor Express.

Ryan is probably in on a potential third party effort, thus his reluctance to back Trump.

Isn’t Ryan very close to his old buddy Mitt?

Four or eight years of the Clinton crime machine and there won’t be much remaining of this country to be worth saving.

Maybe it wouldn’t matter if they field a third party, because its backers will otherwise vote for Mrs. Bill.

They want a third party with a “conservative” candidate to syphon off votes from Trump, the R nominee, which would help Hillary get into the White House and control our lives.

Ryan and his bull shi! of not immediately joining Trump may be responsible for a third party. He is a sick foolish jackass by creating doubt within the party. Trump will be the nominee and who gives the entire House and creditability. They have done nothing to stop King Obama but approved and passed everything the King wanted.

Trump for President.

I think those who are pushing third party don't care about party or country.

They probably never have either; but at least we know that now.

Raw material and links, for anybody interested.

WALLACE: I've got one last question for you and we have about a minute left. There is a report today that a number of leading conservatives are talking about trying to mount an independent conservative campaign for president. How seriously do you take that?

PRIEBUS: Well, I always take things like that seriously, but I also know that the law makes it very difficult. I mean, they could try to hijack another party and get on the ballot, but, look, it's a suicide mission for our country because what it means is that you're throwing down not just eight years of the White House but potentially 100 years on the Supreme Court and wrecking this country for many generations.

And so, I think that's the legacy these folks will leave behind. I think it's very dangerous and there's other ways to get assurances on the things that they are worried about, which is what Paul Ryan is doing, and making sure that some things are understood before moving forward with some particular people and I think Paul Ryan's approach is much better.

WALLACE: If I may, real quickly, what would you say to people like Mitt Romney and Bill Kristol who have involved in this effort?

PRIEBUS: I think they should consider the ramifications of what's going to happen on the Supreme Court, get assurances from Donald Trump that they're satisfied with that would show that he's committed to those conservative justices, make sure the justices that are being considered are people that the Federalist Society and Heritage and other groups think are great, and I think that's the better way to go as opposed to this third party route.

Fox News Sunday Transcript - May 15, 2016

DICKERSON: There's talk of a third party. Bill Kristol and Mitt Romney are trying to put one together. Should they stop that?

PRIEBUS: Well, I don't -- I have heard that Mitt actually isn't looking at that. I'm not sure about Bill Kristol.

But it's a suicide mission, because you're not only changing and throwing out eight years of the White House, but you're also throwing out potentially generations on the Supreme Court. Look, we could have up to three justices change over in the next eight years. And this is a suicide mission. It is not right.

And I think what people should do is take the Paul Ryan approach, which is to work with Donald Trump and find out whether or not there's common ground and whether there can be assurances on the Supreme Court and those sorts of things to make sure that our future is secure down the line, as opposed to blowing everything up.

-- Definitely would be suicide for the GOPe --

I am coming to the view that this "third party" and #NeverTrump nonsense is being seriously considered by a very small number of people who are nominally "in the GOP," and the news reporting is way out of proportion to the number of them.

The same names keep popping up, maybe 50 counting pundits, including the "not against, just holding fire" bunch, like Ryan.

Sasse's remarks caused the Nebraska GOP convention to propose a resolution that kicks out a member who openly works against the candidacy of the party's nominee. It passed 400-8.

So, who do we have? Romney and his acolytes, and some of Cruz's acolytes.

My point is that the number of people involved in this is so small, that it can't reach the level of party suicide. The harm to the body is annoying but not at all health threatening. It is more like a hangnail.
