Pfizer’s Lethal Injection Drug Ban Raises Fears of Alternative Execution Methods in US

Human rights campaigners warn action is needed to stop use of unlicensed drugs or other legally unsatisfactory methods

Human rights groups have welcomed news that pharmaceutical firm Pfizer is to block the sale of its drugs in the US to perform executions, but warned that legally dubious alternatives could take their place.

All companies licensed by the US government to manufacture drugs for state executions have now blocked their use in lethal injections.

Pfizer’s withdrawal follows a campaign targeting pharmaceutical companies and their shareholders.

The company said: “Pfizer makes its products to enhance and save the lives of the patients we serve. Consistent with these values, Pfizer strongly objects to the use of its products as lethal injections for capital punishment.”

In 2010, the Observer revealed that British companies had been secretly supplying the US with lethal injection drugs, triggering calls for an export ban. In 2011, investment firm Unipension sold its shares in a drug company because its pentobarbital was being used in US executions. A Danish doctors’ pension fund has also campaigned strongly on the issue. But according to Maya Foa, director of human rights group Reprieve, which campaigns against the death penalty, the pharmaceutical industry itself was also sympathetic to their views.

Bullets are cheaper and ropes can be reused.

Hemp rope is cheap, reusable and a byproduct from all the states that have legalized pot.

I can understand companies not wanting their drugs to be used for executions. Just use heroin.

Inert Gases are the perfect solution.

They absolutely proven to be painless.

They are 100% effective. Life cannot continue in the absence of oxygen.

An inert gas such as helium or argon replaces the atmosphere in a sealed room. As the oxygen is displaced the condemned loses consciousness and dies.

Because an overabundance of carbon dioxide is the cause of the pain of asphyxiation and not the absence of oxygen the removal of the CO2 in the room also removes the possibility of pain during this form of execution.

The anti-death penalty crowd could not reasonably oppose the use of inert gases on the grounds of pain induced by the method of execution.

Remember: it is about absolute, lawless control, not reason or logic.

The next goal for the left, after banning executions, is banning life sentences.

“Inert Gases are the perfect solution. “

The only reasons I can think of that this method isn’t used is that the people involved in the decision-making are unimaginative, or mired in tradition or dumb as ditch water.

Undead Farben, that's a good 'un.

For fear of "alternative methods" of execution, read "traditional" methods, or "long-standing," which opens an opportunity for the long-overdue reintroduction of the "gibbet," like the once fashionable Gibit de mantfalcone.

So careful to make a savages dying experience an easy one, to hell with the victims who were brutalized! I would imagine that if a law was passed giving the families of the victims a say in the execution method and also a hand in it Im sure there would be a reduction in crime. Im for this

How come the use an alcohol swab on the “patient” before lethal infusion? Are they afraid the “patient” may get an infection?

I’m a proponent for a suicide machine. Repent for your sin by taking your own life. My suicide device is a bit complex, but it is foolproof and can only be worked by the condemned.

On the floor there is two footprints and on the wall two hand prints. Against the wall there is a button that when pushed by the head a single bullet enters the brain. The only way the bullet will fire is if both hands and feet make contact with the prints. This completes the circuit.

Every death row cell is fitted with this device. Imagine being on death row and every day you have to look at this.
