Some of the smallest surface combatants in the U.S. Navy will be getting new missiles with "over the horizon" capabilities. The effort is part of a program to give the troubled Littoral Combat Ship program a major firepower boost.
The Navy has announced that the USS Freedom, one of two types of the so-called Littoral Combat Ship, will be outfitted with the Norwegian-designed Naval Strike Missile. The missile will be ready for the Freedom's next deployment, whereupon it will be evaluated with an eye for fleet-wide adoption.
The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program, originally designed to provide a multi-mission ship capable of operating in near-shore environments, has run into a whole bunch of problems. The LCS relies upon so-called "mission modules" tailored to tackle anti-mine, anti-submarine, and anti-ship threats. Eight years after the first ship was launched all of the mission modules are still behind schedule, leaving the ships with little in the way of originally advertised capabilities. The addition of the Naval Strike Missile is an attempt to fix the anti-ship firepower problem.

And that's a 10,000 ton ship.
The Norwegians sure came up with a boring name for their new anti-ship missile. The older generation of Norwegians missiles were called the Penguin. How about the Puffin.? Or the Elsa in honor of the fictional Norwegians queen from “Frozen”? :0
I love that gif and that dog, wish there was a larger vrsion of it floating around.
I hope the damned thing doesn’t blowup at the end of its performance as many do.
Norway has some awesome R&D in their DOD. I love how efficient their industry tends to be.
