Putin: Russia will consider tackling NATO missile defense threat

Russia is being forced to look for ways to neutralize threats to its national security due to deployment of the NATO anti-missile shield in Europe, Russian President Vladimir Putin said after the alliance launched a missile defense site in Romania. “Now, after the deployment of those anti-missile system elements, we’ll be forced to think about neutralizing developing threats to Russia’s security,” Putin said.

The US missile shield in Europe is a clear violation of Russian-American arms treaties, Putin said at a meeting with Russian military officials, adding that the anti-missile facilities can be easily repurposed for firing short and midrange missiles.

The US anti-missile shield in Europe is yet another step in increasing international tensions and launching a new arms race, he stressed.

"We're not going to be dragged into this race. We’ll go our own way. We’ll work very accurately without exceeding the plans to finance the re-equipment of our Army and Navy, which have already been laid out for the next several years,” Putin said.

When the ABM treaty was signed, the US opted to put our allotted anti-ballistic missiles around our ICBM launch sites.

Russia used their allotment to ring Moscow with ABMs.

Why the difference?

Because there would be no need for Russia to protect their ICBM sites inasmuch as the missiles would already have been launched in a first strike.

The US placement was to defend against a first strike from Russia.

Russia’s pledge of not being the first to strike is a lot of hooey, and any country putting up a shield is wise to do so.

Russia put up a big tantrum over US anti-missile systems in the poorly negotiated New Start strategic nuclear weapons treaty Obama signed with them. They wanted limits on US ABM systems, which were, from what I understand, very weak language, with the threat of withdrawing from the New Start treaty.

Russia has a large strategic nuclear building program to re arm itself with big new multi warhead ICBMs which were suppose to go away with the new treaty, along with new bombers, cruise missiles and new ballistic missile submarines. Ours are all Cold War age.

I suspect Russia intends to use the new anti missile systems in Romania and Poland as the excuse to “break out” of the New Start treaty, leaving us badly outnumbered in strategic weapons. Obama’s legacy will in the end be strategic nuclear inferiority for our country.

Another question is:

Why the hell can’t the #%+*#% Europeans defend themselves? They have more people and more money than we do.
