Trump Civil War: Republican brothers John McCain and Lindsey Graham on different sides of battle
Washington Post ^ | May 12, 2016 | Paul Kane

Sen. Lindsey Graham paused for five full seconds and stumbled over his words pondering the question: When is the last time he split with fellow Republican Sen. John McCain on a major issue?

“I don’t know, let me think about it,” Graham (S.C.) finally said of his closest Senate friend. “There have been several. I just can’t recall right now, right off the top of my head.”

Yet that’s what has happened in the wake of Donald Trump’s ascendancy to presumptive Republican nominee for president. In the Republican civil war over Trump, this is perhaps the most glaring example of two “brothers” fighting on opposite sides of the battlefield. It reflects a larger chasm in the Republican Party over whether to embrace the anti-establishment businessman that could end up costing the party the presidency in November.

Graham, like Bush, took the pledge in August. They didn’t mean it.

Not really. One is up for reelection and the other is not. It’s all beltway kabuki.

They are on the same side. I believe that the only "support" McCain has offered is in the nature of "the voters have spoken." He hasn't said he agrees with the voters, and I'd bet my house that he does not.

They took the pledge because they never imagined in their wildest dreams what is happening would happen....Maybe they’re not so smart after all.

My first thought too when I heard about McCain’s endorsement. I pray that McCain loses his primary election to Dr Kelley!

That was my initial thought. Wonder why no one is stating the obvious reason. /s/

Calling them “brothers” is so....transgenderistically accretive to Juan’s rationality-challenged serendipity and yet appropriative to Linda’s identity as whatever or whomever he identifies as. Or with.

Didn’t understand it, but “transgenderistically accretive” is an awesome turn of words.

Unless the Republicans can present a sure-fire election winning alternative candidate, they should just say they support the designated nominee and will endeavor to work out their differences after the election. I think it’s a lot more important to concentrate on keeping the House and Senate as well as expand their influence in State and local governments.
