Washington (CNN)It is not only the Republican establishment confronting the once-unthinkable reality that Donald Trump is the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

World leaders who previously dismissed and ridiculed the former reality TV star also are adjusting to a new normal.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who at one point called Trump's proposed ban on Muslim foreigners entering the United States "divisive, stupid and wrong," said Thursday at a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that Trump "deserves our respect" for making it through the primaries.

The last time the world looked at the USA like that Reagan was in his prime.

Abe is going to be very happy to have American permission to re militarize Japan. A downsizing of US forces + nuclear weapon is music to his ears.

Everyone does. You don't think at the DNC they're laying awake at night thinking of possible ways to kick her to the curb?

I guess playing hardball is a winning tactic:

Say sorry to Trump or risk special relationship, Cameron told

David Cameron should apologise for calling Donald Trump “divisive, stupid and wrong”, a foreign policy adviser to the Republican frontrunner has said.

The billionaire’s team was shocked to be attacked by the prime minister, George Papadopoulos told The Times. The lawyer, who is advising Mr Trump on Europe and the Middle East, revealed that the likely Republican candidate was considering a tour of both regions but that he had yet to be invited to Britain by the government.

It’s about time. They had no business on commenting in the first place about the American voters’ choice for their president.

I wish foreign leaders - I mean Cameron and Obama - would just keep their big mouths shut.

You don't think at the DNC they're laying awake at night thinking of possible ways to kick her to the curb?

Look back at what happens to Democrats who fell behind in their polls: Wellstone, Carnahan, Torricelli, and more.

Torricelli survived by stepping aside.

Hope that these guys are enjoying their helping of crow.

For dessert, there’s a refreshing course of STFU.

Maybe they, and their follow-on leaders later, will learn not to interfere in the election process of foreign countries?

The world leaders have not been responding to Trump. They have been responding to our LSMs portrayal of Trump. If we send out the messages ridiculing him, they see that as our percception as a nation.
