Hennepin County Opens New Office to Handle Increase in Permit to Carry Applications

Gun sales are up in Minnesota, so much so that some counties are having trouble keeping up with permit applications. Hennepin became the latest county to expand their permit application services, opening a second full-time permit to carry office in Brooklyn Park this week. "We've seen an exponential increase," Sheriff Rich Stanek said. In fact, the Sheriff's Office released numbers Tuesday showing they've seen a 16 percent increase in permit applications since 2014. Stanek said some attribute the rise in applications to recent mass shootings, a rise in violent crime, or Obama administration policies. Regardless, Stanek said the increase does not concern him. "We've had very few problems with those who have concealed carry permits," he explained. "We've had a number of instances when those with concealed carry permits have stepped in to help average citizens who have been victims of violent crime." At Arnzen Arms in Eden Prairie, they also attribute the application spike to a variety of factors, including more information at potential gun-buyer's disposal. "We generally talk to them two or three times before they actually buy the gun," said Adam Maxwell. The most recent numbers from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety show an increase in gun permits as well. They say more than 44,000 permits were issued in 2015, up from almost 21,000 in 2011, but down from a high of more than 60,000 permits issued in 2013
