Long before Donald Trump descended the grand escalator at Trump Tower to declare his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination last June, conservative pundits and nonpartisan clairvoyants alike had laughed off the possibility of the real-estate mogul turned reality TV star ascending to the partys pinnacle, joining the ranks of Ronald Reagan, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. (And, to be fair, Mitt Romney, Alf Landon and John C. Frémont.)
And for months, as Trump gained droves of followers and delegates, their laughter continued.
Theyre not laughing Wednesday. Hours after Trump routed his rivals in Indiana and all but sewed up the Republican nomination, party stalwarts and conservatives long opposed to Trump are coming to grips with the reality of the Manhattan magnate leading their party in the fall. Here are a few predictions that, in hindsight, do not look as great as they once seemed:

I used to say I’d love to be a weatherman, because I could be wrong every day and they’d still pay me. Turns out they pay you more to be one of The Experts and you don’t have to be any more accurate...
Weather forecasters are actually more accurate.
It will be more legendary than the 2000 election “Gravitas” montage!
We (collectively) elected BO as president. And BS would have been a new low water mark.
At the very least Trump will be an improvement over any of the status quo Dem candidate options...
Not just the nominee, but soon to be presumptive President.
Herself goes into exile after the election.
The next few months will be great fun. The debate between Hillary and Trump will be wild events! Good TV. The fun has yet to start! Many more twists and turns in this race. Trump will need all the support we can give him! He needs friends in the Senate and House—Tea Party people who can support Trumps Goals. Who is on the primary list in California that is Tea Party approved?
I literally gasped, not because I thought he was wrong, but because I didn't think the truth would be accepted by the very conservative base in South Carolina.
I thought, "Man, he's stepped in it this time." Instead, his polling numbers soared. Turned out I wasn't the only Republican pissed off about Iraq.
Please don’t insult weathermen. They bat at least 25%. LOL!
Mrs. Bill is NOT a status quo option. She is the truly totalitarian option. She would have the USSC in her pocket and probably the Senate and even the House.
I certainly don't think GWB lied about it... I do think he was acting in good faith. In retrospect perhaps he could have done things differently, but at this point it doesn't matter.
Despite that one issue, I do like Trump's stance on many other issues, so I'm willing to not rehash GWB's decisions at this point... especially since they're not relevant.
I felt exactly the way you did. I was shocked and happy when his numbers went up. GWB was such an epic disaster for our party and nation and I had no clue that other republicans agreed with me.
For me it’s no do much whether he lied about Iraq or not, but rather why didn’t we invade Saudi Arabia? They were responsible for 911 not Iraq and they continue to finance the killing of Americans to this day.
It’s almost like a rich kid burned our house down and instead of beating him up Bush had us beat up local bully who had nothing to do with it while the rich kid paid Bush and his family off.
No reason to point out individuals who got Trump wrong in the past. Fine to call them out if they don’t become NeverHillary now though. And fine to point out all of the predictions of failure that Trump avoided as long as it’s not focused on an individual’s failures (unless they decide to support Hillary)
He's our man. He's going to win.
Bush is gonna cream him!!!
