As States Expand Gun Rights, the Police Join the Opposition
The New York Times ^ | 5/3/16 | CAMPBELL ROBERTSON and TIMOTHY WILLIAMS

GULFPORT, Miss. — Guns in bars. Guns in airports. Guns in day care centers and sports arenas. Conservative state lawmakers around the country are pressing to weaken an array of gun regulations, in some cases greatly expanding where owners can carry their weapons.

police have become increasingly vocal in denouncing the measures. They say the new laws expose officers to greater danger and prevent them from doing their jobs effectively

The police that feel this way need to enroll in a different police academy than he one they've attended. Reason? Simple: First, any LEO who's life gets saved by an armed citizen should be thankful. One that doesn't is in complete denial of reality.

“Do you want every incident on your street to escalate to acts of gun violence?”

Gun violence is performed by the criminally minded. The more guns on the side of the law diminish criminal performance..

they have no power to ascertain the potential criminal background---- said Ladd Everitt

That, Mr. Everitt, can be greatly diminished by pushing "No More Political Correctness" and promoting the ability for law abiding citizens to report suspicious activity etc. It would augment crime suppression.

There is much more that can be commented on but it is all elementary in the end. Common sense should dictate solutions not knee-jerk reactions. I'll leave the rest up to those whom care to comment..

I’ve learned not to confuse street cops with politically appointed police chiefs. The moment a chief disagrees with a mayor, etc on any issue h/she is gone.

All I have to say is that any cop who isn’t willing to honor their oath needs to turn in their badge.

It’s cops like them who are why some urban dwellers are demanding their RKBA.

Correct. Example, here the chief in the big town south of me is a left coast transplant and big POS enabler who caters to whichever minority group yells loudest. His men hate him and they know he will not back them on anything. Most of the ones I know are very pro 2nd.

I went back a reread the piece to make sure, but no where did I see a street cop or County Sheriff quoted. Just POlice chiefs. POlice chiefs are political cops, not street cops and as such serve at the pleasure of their patron. The mayor. So as a rule Police chiefs usually just parrot the words their patron tell them to say.

FRiend, you need to shout that from the rooftops:

Police chiefs are political animals and as such will do and say anything to ingratiate themselves with the preexisting power structure.

Police chiefs are by definition statists.

I suppose the rowdy drunk cops that hang out at bars don’t like the idea of citizens being armed in the same establishments they frequent.

Maybe the paper-pusher types have a problem with it too?

Conservative state lawmakers cannot allow citizens to carry guns in the secure area of an airport. That’s federal. Can’t allow carry in the Post Office either.

"They say the new laws expose officers to greater danger and prevent them from doing their jobs effectively."

I would like to see in print just what laws the police feel expose them to greater danger. We have a Neighborhood Watch program....our Sheriffs expect us to take care of a "situation" until they can respond....you just might need a hand gun to do that. The NYT need to be less detached in their propaganda reporting.

Agreed.

All I've heard of is the Sherriff's supporting constitutional carry.

The fact that this ‘study’ is from the NY Times should tell you all you need to know.

I have lived in Virginia and carried for 50+ years.
I find it strangely ironic (not really) that before this Liberal POS AG started playing with the reciprocity, we were granted carry privileges in 40 some states.

The ‘irony’ comes in that in the States where I can carry legally I, for the most part, really don’t feel I need a weapon.

Among the places I CAN’T carry is
New York City & state of NY
Baltimore & state of MD
Chicago & state of IL
Newark/Trenton & state of NJ
WASHINGTON DC

I guess it is a coincidence that where we CAN’T carry - are the ones with the highest crime rates.

We ‘suffer’ from a ‘Tea Party’ malady in VA...

GOPe who didn’t like the choice of Gov stayed home and WE ended up with McAuliffe who did his damnedest to weaken our Constitutional Rights along with a LtGov and Idiotic AG who follow in the Bloomberg/Soros mold.

We hear how Virginia is going to go against Trump OR at least for HRC - but I really believe the ‘stay-at-homers’ will turn out this year.

The real beauty is that Bloomberg was told to take a hike on at least 3 separate occasions plus his other meddling

“Well then, why not ban cops from carrying guns into those same places? After all, if everyone is disarmed in those places why do they need to carry guns there?”

“That’s crazy, criminals will still carry guns into them.”

“Exactly.”

“Gun rights” are natural rights.

They can not be “expanded”. They can only be infringed.

The police don’t like this because once the public figures out that the police DON’T stop crime and, as an armed citizen they CAN, they will also realize they don’t need the police anymore. Except to write up accident reports for insurance companies.

The rank and file for the most part have no problem with the revised carry laws. It’s usually the administrators (read: politicians) who have problems with them. And it’s usually pretty obvious when a cop becomes a politician. It’s when their job ceases to be about policing and starts to be about pleasing their political betters.

Agreed, but it would be a totally different story if they were popularly elected independently of the municipal “leadership” like most Sheriffs. It’s kinda fun watching Chicago replace one POS, MCarthy with another POS who’s only difference is his skin color. They are all organ grinder’s monkeys.

My comment is, “Consider the source!” The NEW YORK TIMES?

My Dad always reminded us that whoever is writing the statement/article has an agenda, his own or the newspaper’s? Any doubters out there?

I submit that the police are not concerned with danger from law abiding gun owners. Only the criminals, who are never effected by gun control laws, prevent “them from doing their jobs effectively.
