Candelario Jimon Alonzo came to the U.S. dreaming of becoming something more than what seemed possible along the rutted roads of his hometown in Guatemala's highlands. This was his chance: He could earn a U.S. high school education and eventually become a teacher.
Instead, the 16-year-old spends most days alone in the tumbledown Memphis house where he lives with his uncle, leaving only occasionally to play soccer and pick up what English he can from his friends.

Why doesn’t he go to the corner of MLK Blvd and wait for a work truck to pick him up? There are plenty of weeds to pull. He can do that until Trump gets in. Then take his hard earned savings back to Guat.
It is my dream of having the gringos pay for everything...
I’ll bet if he looks and tries hard, he can get an education of some sort in Guatemala.
Or, perhaps he could return and apply for a Visa here. I’m really sorry but we must take care of our own first.
Good. We owe these people nothing.

Stop it - I’m all choked up...
I’m surprised he hasn’t moved to Oregon
I don’t care one wit about Candelario. Go Home Now!
..Migrant children kept from enrolling in school...
And???
Migrant, or illegal?
Well since you’re here illegally and all and since some of us like to help our own, perhaps there’s a better solution if you went back to your own country and help them instead.
If you say migrant you don’t have to say illegal, but in this case they are synonymous.
I”m from Memphis and Shelby County is very poor. They in no way have the resources to deal with these illegal immigrants and cater to their needs. Why should the legal residents of Shelby country be made to do without services for their children so Illegals with no formal schooling can get caught up?
We have enough people as it is. We need a moratorium for many decades on all immigration.
Sure, the education system is lousy in Guatemala. The solution is not to allow illegals from Guatemala to squat in the US, but to work to improve access to education in Guatemala.
I suggest we not only round up all the illegal alien Guatemalans, but also the liberals whining that we should pay to educate illegals and send them all to Guatemala. The liberals can go to poor rural areas and build schools and teach. This way, everyone wins—Guatemalans can get a better education and there are fewer illegal aliens and liberals in the US.
My grandson started first grade in Oregon at a school that, for half the day, spoke only Spanish. The poor kid came home everyday crying. I asked one of the teachers what the purpose of the program was and she said that it created a job for her. My daughter had to jump through hoops to get him transferred to a different school that spoke English all day. My grandson is now going to school in Texas.
Ship their asses back to their Guacamolean crap hole BEFORE he starts raping and robbing.
Sell it to the soap operas, Jose. Candelario doesn’t even exist; he’s a creation of some bleeding-heart journalist who is twanging our heartstrings.
And my strings are all broken.
Exactly as they should.
Period.
