A Kalamazoo mother says her daughter has been isolated and bullied all because her father followed the law.
As Newschannel 3 reported, the KRESA West Campus was locked down after the father of a 4-year-old legally open carried his gun on campus.
Now, the man's wife is speaking out for the first time about the ramifications of that decision.
The mother says her daughter refuses to go back to the music class, because she's alone.
All of the students have been transferred to another class on a different campus.
The mom says her husband just wants to protect his daughter, and he shouldn't be punished when he's simply following the law.
Jamie Warren's 4-year-old daughter looks forward to a music class at KRESA's West Campus--a class parents are required to attend.
Warren's husband sat in on the class.
"I think he attended two or three sessions before anyone noticed that he was carrying a gun," she said.
By law, Warren's husband can open carry his gun.
He didn't want to go on camera, but Warren says its for the protection of their little girl.
"Schools are gun free zones, and they tend to be targeted for mass shootings. He feels that he's keeping her safer by carrying and having the ability to protect her," she said.
But some parents at KRESA's West Campus say no.
"This is not the way we live in a civilized society," one parent said.
After a heated parent meeting, Superintendent Doug Campbell moved the music class from West Campus to the administration building to avoid lockdown situations.
Campbell says several parents are also transferring their students into a different class.
"There's several hundred students over there and many of their parents have expressed very significant concerns and very frankly, anger towards us for doing this and I thought well, I've gotta respect their rights, respect the rights of the parents of children who have been traumatized possibly by violent situations," he said.
But Warren says her family's rights have now been violated.
"When he decided to not break the law, they began the process of bullying him. She saw him treated like a criminal for carrying the letter of the law," Warren said.
Both Warren and Campbell say something needs to change. Both are frustrated with Michigan law, which says CPL holders can only open carry on school grounds.
"If he had been allowed to conceal, no one would have known he was carrying and all this drama wouldn't have happened," Warren said.
Lawmakers in Lansing are considering changes allowing CPL holders to conceal carry at schools. But some educators say that can open up a whole other can of worms.
"Police are trained that if there's an active shooter, they're coming rushing in looking for somebody with a gun and somebody who is a good guy with a gun who is trying to find the bad guy with a gun could be mistaken as the bad guy with a gun and be shot by the police. It's a very complicated situation and we're trying to do the best we can," Campbell said.
"If she were to be hurt because he didn't have it to protect her that would be something he couldn't live with," Warren said.
The bill that would allow concealed carry in schools has been introduced in the State Senate, but no vote has been taken as of yet.
As for the KRESA situation, the music class ends next week, and the Warrens say they won't be back until something changes.
“The mom says her husband just wants to protect his daughter, and he shouldn’t be punished when he’s simply following the law.”
He is not being punished and everyone seems to be following the law.
“But Warren says her family’s rights have now been violated.”
No they have not.
“Oh, so in this case bullying is OK”
Apparently.
Typical hypocrisy from the left.
There is no bullying going on.
The Campbells are doing what they think is best for their child and the other parents are doing what they believe to be best for their children.
How about stripping asshole public school administrators of any policy powers that assert any differences from standing laws in any way whatsoever, on pain of loss of legal indemnification - allow them to be PERSONALLY sued and arrested.
SCREW these DAMMED totalitarian jackboot BASTARDS!
Agreed. The education establishment in this country needs a good swift kick in the ass.

Looks like Mrs. Warren has a different take on it than you.
No they have not.
Stuff it, liberal. If the girl was being isolated in class because she declared herself to be a boy and the rest of the parents objected, civil rights lawyers would be tripping over themselves to line up for millions in payments and the administrator would be fired.
But because its the social isolation of a little girl over her father's perfectly legal gun, liberal pukes like you see no problem.
How does it feel to be the incarnation of what is wrong with the entire world? Do you get off on it?
No one is treating him like a criminal as he has been arrested.
Nor is he being bullied.
“But because its the social isolation of a little girl over her father’s perfectly legal gun, liberal pukes like you see no problem.”
All the parents involved are acting within the law and within their rights.
Warren has a right to carry in the school and the other parents have the right to pull their children from the class.
Unless their are metal detectors present, Pop should have put it in his pocket or waistband. Otherwise, always expect a brouhaha from school types.
You sir, need a Snickers.
Sorry, candy is no longer allowed by school administrators or parents who care about their mini-rats.
Yes, because it's so much more civilized to let criminal savages run rampant.
Are people really this stupid?
/rhetorical question
That being said, the guy should have CC'd.
“This is not the way we live in a civilized society,” one parent said......Actually she’s correct. But who said society is civilized when libs have been in charge since Wilson?
I agree with Timpanagos. He decided to open carry and the other parents decided to move their children to another class. What’s the big deal? The kid is 4 years old. They’re still eating each others boogers - she’s not being ostracized.
If they are pulling their children from class without just cause under civil law, they comprise a conspiracy to defraud the rights and well-being of that little girl. So as you admit the father has the right to wear the gun, and there's been no violence or threats, where is their just cause?
Without just cause, the administrator has no right to wrongfully invoke isolation policies against an innocent little girl, and the parents should be denied their requests to collectively harm the little girl and sanctioned from further involvement with school policy because of their proven willingness to manipulate policy through fraud to harm children for political agenda reasons. Those parents should also be sued for conspiracy to harm this particular little girl, and the administrator should be fired, sued and jailed.
Although I must say, Mao would agree with your interpretation of what the law is to be used for. He followed your legal principles to legally murder a hundred million Chinese citizens.
The logic of the soccer mom. Thanks for sharing. I leave you to your mental world, such as it is.
Your dispute is with Mrs. Warren, then.
Why don’t you contact her and tell her why she is wrong?
“Lawmakers in Lansing are considering changes allowing CPL holders to conceal carry at schools. “
Evidently the law is he must open carry in schools.
