Dark chocolate is in. So, too, is beef jerky. And full-fat ice cream? You bet.
Driven by fast-changing definitions of what is healthy to eat, people are turning to foods they shunned just a couple of years ago. Studies now suggest that not all fat, for example, necessarily contributes to weight gain or heart problems. That has left companies scrambling to push some foods that they thought had long passed their popularity peak and health advocates wondering what went wrong.
Under the new thinking, not all fat is bad, and neither are all salty foods. A stigma among the public remains for sugar substitutes, but less so for cane sugar, at least in moderation. And all of those attributes are weighed against qualities like simplicity and taste.
I think the risk-reward equation has changed, said Steve French, a managing partner at the Natural Marketing Institute, a research firm, said.
Edys ice cream, known as Dreyers west of the Rockies, is a case in point. Edys sold 10.8 percent more of its Edys Grand Ice Cream, a full-fat ice cream, in the 52 weeks that ended Feb. 21 compared with the year before, according to IRI, a data and research firm. Other full-fat ice creams also had sales gains.
Over the same period, Edys sold 4.8 percent less of its Slow-Churned Ice Cream, made with a process that lowers the fat content. When the product was introduced in 2004, it was promoted as having less fat and fewer calories and sales soared.
Now, that sort of marketing is gone. Instead, the company has retooled some of its Slow-Churned products to make them with fewer ingredients and to include cane sugar rather than high-fructose corn syrup, which many consumers dont like.

old lady who lived until 116 (an age I can only dream of) drank three Dr. Peppers a day.
Today, if a 20 year old gal told her doctor that, he would say she is going to have diabetes by 30, stroke or heart attack by 40, dead by 50.
The bottom line is that due to conflicting/changing information people are going to want tasty treats.

Criminals trying to run our lives! Eff them all.
The reason consumers are going back to traditional products with real ingredients is that they are tired of consuming card board gussied up to look like real food.

But I’m pretty sure sugar is, for your teeth if nothing else. Eat what you like but when we all pay the cost of dental and other treatments it is a societal concern.
I am not a scientist nor do I play one on TV but isn’t it possible because of an individual’s genetics that different foods affect different people differently?
I would think genetics plays a large part in a person’s body shape and their overall health.
I would think the only advise anyone needs is moderation in all things, and include some exercise in your life. May not live longer but you will enjoy the life you have.
lol.
I get such a kick out of the human body.
Of course it surrenders to cancer and other ailments many times.
However there are many instances where it just should die and it doesn’t!
My aunt told me they were discussing which funeral parlor to use when I was in ICU for a head injury 10 years ago.
I’m still here :) Haven’t eaten a healthy meal in maybe 30 years. Not one piece of fruit or a dab of a vegetable.
I’m 47 and my weight is terrible.
Come to think of it, I’ve pushed my luck enough!!
I should have swollen legs, diabetes, a few heart attacks under the belt, NOT be able to get around like I can.
And I wasn’t expected to type more than a few words a minute again after injury. Back up to 100.
God has given me chances, time to change.
As for Keith, why bother? :)
I can’t deal with the chemicals and preservatives in them any more.
Most are a trip to migraine-ville for me.
I had some fantastic Japanese food last night and am still very pepped despite I ate too much. I’d like to know what part it was. Guess I may get some bits of takeout and see. It would be an excuse to get some of that wonderful onion soup to go.
I’m in the same camp on genetics and individual builds as you.
My best friends sister can eat whatever, whenever and stay exactly the same normal good looking build.
In my case, I even look at a hamburger, I feel like I’ve gained a couple of pounds.
I don’t know what it is really. Before I retired, went to lunch every day. Usually variations of some kind of fast food from multiple places. 2 hrs later always indigestion and burbing....terrible.
I don’t do that now that I stopped with that.
“The government should stop trying to dictate what people eat.”
It’s all about generating revenue and nothing about health.
What liberals hate most is any unregulated freedom. Everything you
do must be taxed and controlled. We have three presidential
candidates that see no problem with this.
In the grand scheme of things, storing fat is is nature’s way of survival in times of famines. Western civilizations is in a rare time when compared to the history of man, there is no shortage of food.
Up until about a hundred years ago starvation was a real possibility for many (and still is in some places).
So after tens of thousands of generations that had to deal with a shortage of food is it surprising our bodies resist any efforts to “get thin”.
That is not an excuse for gluttony or becoming a couch potato, but it does explain why it is easier to add weight then it is to lose it.
That is my story and I am sticking to it ;)
Did you partake of sukiyaki?
sukiyaki, real sukiyaki, has disappeared from Japanese eateries
Oh brother!
I’ve gotta say, the metronome of culinary persecution never really influenced my eating habits. I pretty much eat what I like...and don’t eat what I don’t like (including peas Mr Obama).
True that!
