His general-election appeal in question, Donald Trump's senior team is promising anxious Republicans that voters will see "a real different guy" soon after the GOP front-runner claims his party's presidential nomination.
"When he's out on the stage, when he's talking about the kinds of things he's talking about on the stump, he's projecting an image that's for that purpose," Paul Manafort, who is leading Trump's primary election strategy, told Republican National Committee members in a private briefing late Thursday. The Associated Press obtained a recording of the discussion.
"You'll start to see more depth of the person, the real person. You'll see a real different guy," Manafort said. "He gets it," Manafort said of Trump's need to moderate his brash personality. "The part that he's been playing is evolving into the part that now you've been expecting, but he wasn't ready for, because he had first to complete the first phase. The negatives will come down. The image is going to change."
The message is part of the campaign's intensifying effort to convince party leaders that Trump will help deliver big electoral gains this fall, despite his contentious ways. Yet it also opens him up to questions about his authenticity.
Republican rival Ted Cruz seized on the remarks in a radio interview late Thursday.

And, Cruz, you had your chance and blew it. It wasn't The Donald who beat you, it was your own petulance. Now shut up and grow up.
Are you crazy?
Not at all.
It doesn't matter who the GOP nominates, that person must beat the Hildabeast. Period. End of Story.
If the person needs to swing left for the generals, so be it.
It's not that I agree with any position he takes, but this is strictly a matter of Realpolitik. The objective is to beat the Hildabeast...
snicker ...
The people will like what they see.
Hillary will go down as Trump goes up.
She will have to mimic some Trump traits to help sagging numbers.
Not sure how the far-left will handle that...
Translation: Republicans are rednecks. Throw them some red meat to get their vote. I’ll speak more “reasonably” in the general and move to the middle to appeal to independents and liberals... just look at my bathroom and abortion comments for an example.
Sounds like John McCain and Mitt Romney.
Exactly so.
I hope you recognized that at the time.
But whether you did or not, it's too late to do anything about it. As the management of FR has clearly stated, we must all work together now to help him crush the Hildabeast.
As if the MSM and D.C. has not done this relentlessly 24/7 since 6/16/2015, day one.
Yet when questioned about the lawyers/politicians in D.C. regarding decades of decline and country killing job performance, we get nothing but silence.
I have often said GOP candidates should run to left...then pivot Right when elected. Dems run Right then go left (usually, but this year is weird)
Manafort is talking about persona, no issues. How many times have people complained about Trump not acting “presidential”? Manafort specifically said he’s talking about personality, and reducing Trump’s high negatives that the #nevertrumpers love to rail about. He compared Trump to Hillary by saying Trumps perceived negatives are about personality with is fixable, compared to Hillary’s that are about character, which isn’t. Show me where he said one word about changing position on issues?
Big nothingburger.
Just another political chameleon? Is selling himself as one thing but once he’s got what he wants will morf into something totally different. We’ve been fooled like that to many times.
So, has Trump been lying up to now, or will he be lying when he becomes “a real different guy?”
Sheesh.
She’s never looked so good!
Enough of the Cruz BS. The ONLY thing happening is Trump is toning it down and acting more Presidential. Put a sock in it, your boy lost.
Well, remember that we all wanted an outsider so we could stick it to the GOP Establishment, right?
Since we have a real outsider, we don't have a record of governance to refer to when figuring out what he'll do in office. You can't rely upon what he did in business; there are a whole different set of pressures on elected officials than on businessmen.
So I have a very simple rule of thumb when considering this problem: better to gamble on that Trump will do the right thing on one out of a hundred issues he'll be faced with than to take the sure thing and know that the Hildabeast will do the right thing on none of them.
You don’t “swing to the left” to win elections. You convince even larger numbers of voters that your way is the right way. Swinging to the left is totally asinine.
