Middle-aged white people now account for a third of all suicides in the U.S., a new government report shows.
Suicide is the nation's 10th leading cause of death, and the overall rate rose 24 percent in 15 years, according to the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Suicides have long been most common among white people — particularly older white males. But most striking in the new report is the growth in whites ages 45 to 64.
They were a third of suicide deaths in 2014, up from about a quarter in 1999.
"The findings in this report are extremely concerning," said Nadine Kaslow, an Emory University researcher and past president of the American Psychological Association.
The CDC data — released Friday — provides a detailed look at the latest year's suicide statistics, and a broader look at how much the situation has changed over 15 years.
There were nearly 43,000 U.S. suicides in 2014. More than 14,000 of them were middle-aged whites — twice the combined total for all blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Pacific Islanders, American Indians, and Alaska Natives.
In other terms — a group that represents 18 percent of the U.S. population accounted for 33 percent of the suicides.

Suicide Warning Signs:
Appearing depressed or sad most of the time. (Untreated depression is the number one cause for suicide.)
Talking or writing about death or suicide.
Withdrawing from family and friends.
Feeling hopeless.
Feeling helpless.
Feeling strong anger or rage.
Feeling trapped -- like there is no way out of a situation.
Experiencing dramatic mood changes.
Abusing drugs or alcohol.
Exhibiting a change in personality.
Acting impulsively.
Losing interest in most activities.
Experiencing a change in sleeping habits.
Experiencing a change in eating habits.
Losing interest in most activities.
Performing poorly at work or in school.
Giving away prized possessions.
Writing a will.
Feeling excessive guilt or shame.
Acting recklessly. (If you live near a military base and see a boot on a crotch rocket--send up a prayer for them. You probably won't be able to catch up to them in your VW)
It should be noted that some people who die by suicide do not show any suicide warning signs.
But about 75 percent of those who die by suicide do exhibit some suicide warning signs, so we need to be aware of what the suicide warning signs are and try to spot them in people. If we do see someone exhibiting suicide warning signs, we need to do everything that we can to help them.

Middle-aged whites are responding to the results of the past 10 years of White House occupants. I’ve heard that, “When your good memories exceed your hopes and dreams, your life is over.” Decent Americans no longer have hopes and dreams.

I’ve noticed that bored people tend to kill themselves more. That’s not true of the mentally ill but of seemingly rational sane people. I’ve seen a lot of normally rational people turning up suddenly dead.
People who focus on serving others seem to have a better survival rate because there is no shortage of things to do.
It’s also attributable to the breakdown of the family.
I wonder how much is related to the enormous amounts of people taking psyche meds...Geez, its getting to the point where I’m almost the only one I know who isn’t on them.

Thanks for posting those references. Suicides among active military and veterans are at all-time highs. Very tragic.
Because Kevin Williamson and National Review has written that they wish white working Americans would just die.
Conversely, Trump has said that this group is America’s great asset and they are key to making America great again. And the solution is bringing jobs back.
