A high school in Smithfield, NC now offers another lane of study for some students: Members of the Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program are able to study their aim on campus.
The JROTC built a 1,200-square-foot, six-lane, indoor shooting range at the Smithfield-Selma High School and students began using the facility last week. The $10,000 in costs for the range was donated by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

I started going to summer camp up in Maine at age 5, and we had riflery (and archery) there. Very heavy emphasis of course on safety... I loved it and was pretty good. I think all kids should be taught about guns... safety, proper respect for them and how to properly use them.
I was on my high school rifle team, we had an indoor range in the basement of the gym colocated with the JROTC. When my father retired from the Army, he established a JROTC program at Central High School in Sanford, NC. The first order of business was to construct a rifle range under the bleachers of the football stadium. Andy Jackson, who was wounded in a duel in my 4 Great GF’s tavern in Nashville, was on the $20 bill back in those days.
Yes - they aren’t using half the football field I imagine!
My daughter’s team is supported by a local gun club. Kind of small and not much of a team - more like a club. Down the road another ten miles is a larger club with a pretty professional youth team. They probably practice twice a week compared to twice a month. (Although my daughter is out shooting every weekend).
The other team travels thousands of miles and racks up the awards. Some of the kids are getting college scholarships for it! My daughter is going to college in the fall. Her school SHOULD have a gun club as it is in prime hunting country. But it doesn’t. She wants to start a club - and I told her she should look into these grants to get an actual team started. It really is hard to believe her college doesn’t have one.
Its pretty cool to go to the state matches and see all the kids with their guns.
I was a really good shot with my .22 growing up. Could hit a bottle top at 40 feet every time. I went to college and they had a shooting team. I figured I’d be a star. They handed me one of those target rifle contraptions and I couldn’t hit anything! I asked them if I could just use my single-shot Ithaca!

I was on rifle team at Commerce High in NYC. But this was in 1941. I don’t know if this school exists now.

Thanks! I liked the part about the “good attitude.” My daughter has OCD and can be really tough on herself in most situations. When she first picked up a shotgun I thought “Well, this is not going to go well, but, what the heck.” I figured missing the bird would go against her perfection.
Except she hit 7 out of 10 of the first time she ever shot a shotgun!
She really likes the sporting clays, and it is challenging. I’m amazed at her attitude. She can hit the first three/four and then miss the last four. She’ll turn around and shake her head with a smile and go “What was THAT about!?” Then it is on to the next station.
Most of the kids are pretty good about the misses. Some of the boys get really hard on themselves. And then of course their shooting goes all to heck.
My Virginia high school had a range back in 1961. But then those were the days Boy Scouts could bicycle to a troop meeting with .22 rifles and not be deemed a threat. Makes me sad how our society has deteriorated.

Demanding yes. My daughters and I spend an enormous amount of time casting, reloading, cleaning and finally shooting. We’re HEAVY into the bowling pin match circuit which isn’t too hard to afford financially. But now, our daughters are venturing out into the action circuit. That may be a different story. Thank God we build our own guns so time will tell. BTW,,,, Ashe County is very much like your state,,,, four seasons, hot, cold etc. We had the opportunity to compete in a pin match just north of a small town named (not sure how to spell it) Winstead, Wisted????.

Are they of a competitive spirit? My GD just hit *teen* and she doesn’t think anything is *cool* anymore. Makes me sad.
