Apple refused China request for source code in last two years: lawyer

Apple has been asked by Chinese authorities within the last two years to hand over its source code but refused to do so, the company's top lawyer told U.S. lawmakers at a hearing on Tuesday.

Apple general counsel Bruce Sewell made the statement in response to a line of attack from law enforcement officials who have attempted to portray Apple as complicit in handing over information to Chinese authorities for business reasons while refusing to cooperate with U.S. requests for access to private data in criminal investigations.

Apple Inc and the FBI returned to Washington to testify before lawmakers about their heated disagreement over law enforcement access to encrypted devices, highlighted in the case of a locked iPhone linked to a gunman in last December's Islamist militant-inspired shootings in San Bernardino, California.

Earlier in the hearing before a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee, Captain Charles Cohen, commander in the Indiana State Police, repeated the suggestion that Apple has quietly cooperated with Beijing. But when pressed by Representative Anna Eshoo, a California Democrat, for the source of that claim, Cohen only cited news reports.

“That takes my breath away," a visibly frustrated Eshoo said. "That is a huge allegation.”

Why hasn’t the judge tossed this case out?

The government already unlocked the phone, so they can’t claim to need anything from Apple anymore. Seems like malicious prosecution at this point.

Oh nevermind, I noticed this is in reference to a congressional hearing. So it’s just a dog & pony show to justify the backdoor law they want to get passed.

China sued Microsoft for its source code and won.

That does not look good for Apple.

Opinion:

The thought of a company having to supply source code is ridiculous and is a crime against nature. Songs are protected, art is protected. Photos are protected!

Automobile manufacturers are not required to even supply parts lists. Those disassembly/reassembly instructions and parts lists with images are manufactured by third parties who reverse engineer the autombiles.

Apple, the Smart Phone company. They probably consider themselves a World Entity. Apple probably consider’s China’s request as equal to the FBI’s request.

Speaking of Apple, they just announced their overpriced Macbooks. They are still far behind Dell with their XPS 13. Apple is still stuck on Thunderbolt 2 while Dell has been offering a far better product with Thunderbolt 3 for about 6 months now.

But they still have their little phones.
