Malloy Proposes Deep Cuts in School Funding, With 28 Districts Losing All Money
Hartford Courant ^

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's proposal this week to eliminate education cost-sharing grants for 28 of the state's wealthiest school districts and to reduce funding significantly for many others was intensely criticized Wednesday by some school officials and key legislators.

Malloy's plan calls for protecting the education funds in the state's 30 lowest-performing school districts.

"To take a district like mine … and completely eliminate the funding is entirely irresponsible," Madison Superintendent Thomas Scarice said. The district stands to lose $1.57 million.

Taken together with the state's "countless unfunded mandates" for districts, Scarice said, Malloy's proposal is "nothing less than unspeakable."

The slashing of education funding was part of a revised budget proposal from Malloy in an effort to close a $922 million deficit projected for the next fiscal year.

Rep. Andy Fleischmann, D-West Hartford and co-chairman of the legislature's education committee, said Malloy's plan for education funding is "not bold or smart" and is a proposal "that no one would ever vote for."

Hahaha. They thought the Dems cared for the children. Now they find out they were lied to.

But i'm sure he will cut welfare fraud too, right?

Just proves to me that the wealthy are as addicted to handouts as everyone else.

Don’t comply with the unfunded mandates. The carrot is gone. What are they gonna do, bus the kids to New Haven?

Another transfer of money from those who earn it to those who don’t.

That’s okay, he is only cutting funding for kids in “rich” school districts.

Uh, we paid the taxes. They aren't "handouts". It's our money coming back, minus the vigorish we have to pay the government bureaucrats.

I live in this state. Every year there are tax increases, never spending decreases. You cannot give this state enough money.

I would have already moved if it wasn’t for the family situation. Eventually, I will move.

Malloy is redistributing wealth within CT like a good Democrat. There has never been any handouts back to my town in CT.

Malloy was a “short bus” rider when he was young, (Not kidding, a fact) yet he get elected twice. Now whose the more “educationally challenged”, I’ll show you.

Maybe they can get rid of all those Assistant to the Assistant to the vice Dean of student self esteem programs and all those phoney baloney 100,000 gigs they hand out to each other and paybacks to all the political hacks. I have given up on the people in this State ever coming around and getting rid of the corrupt DemocRATS who have brought this state to this low point in its history. Can't wait to move out!

Just raise taxes. We are told endlessly how much people on the East Coast are willing to pay higher taxes to have all of the wonderful services.

So, just pay up and shut up.

Amusing to hear public educators whining about Malloy when every one of them voted for him.

Blue state bureaucracy imploding as higher taxes drive people out of the state, while costs rise out of control.

This is year eight of an economic “recovery”.

What is Conn’s budget going to look like in the next recession ?

Education cuts of $65 million out of a deficit of $922 million. The rest has to come from somewhere.

This is the wealthy areas in CT that already fund most of the state losing what little they get back for all they fork over. It’s just a way to increase the progressive tax structure and redistribution in the state.

Malloy has jacked up tax after tax after tax—and they stole just enough votes in the usual Democrat-controlled city districts to return him to office for his second term of mismanagement and destruction.

I don’t know how much longer I’ll stay.

CT gets Exactly what it deserves after Senator Governor Lowell Weicker’s implementation of an income tax in 1990 which was promised to fix the state’s budget woes for good.

CT / dems-liberals NEVER have enough of other people’s money.
They arogantly chased countless businesses and productive residents out of the state over the course of 25 years.
Their real estate market and population rate haven’t recovered ever since they implemented the income tax.
Local property taxes are $5000+ / year for many modest 2000 Sq ft homes.
It’s become too expensive to live there.
Eff CT.

My real estate tax is 7000+. If I do find the right job opportunity, I will take a real hit when I sell it in many ways. I doubt it will ever increase in value in the next 10 years. Although in 10 years my property tax will be approaching 10K. I would be willing to sell it at a loss to get the hell out here. I can’t believe this state isn’t void of population.
