Actually, there are large and growing numbers of snot-nosed kids that need a good whipping.

I’m on the principal’s side.

The principal should have paddled the idiot mother.

I know I got whacked pretty good by nuns in 1st and 2nd grade. I didn’t turn into a monster. I think it did me good. As a matter of fact when I complained to my dad about it once, he piled on and gave me another licking. Gheesh, it’s tough being a kid!

I used to get it by the nuns as a kid in parochial school in the 50s early 60s. Usually a single swat with the pointer to the back of the head or knuckles.

Then if dad found out I needed to get whacked....i’d get whacked again.

Worked well. The real bad kids behaved....at least while in school

Absence of spanking in childhood leads to batons, tazers, and guns in adulthood.

“is paddling really an effective way to punish a child this young?”

Yes, if done under proper control and appropriate circumstances. Is it okay for a principal to do it against the will of the parent? NO.

When I was a kid, the Principal used a rubber strap across the palms of the hands. Any punishment I got at school, I was guaranteed to get double at home! I only needed to get the strap once, to learn not to cut up.

I drive a bunch of 13-14 year olds on my school bus. Believe me, at least 50% of them should have had their butts paddled by their parents 10 years ago!

If my Mom filmed every time the Nuns paddled my brothers and sister, she would have had to join a entertainment guild.

My dad always said, “You get a whipping at school, you will get another when you get home!”

So we kept quiet when we got one! And we deserved it!

That’s only a small taste of the abuse that government will rain down on this kid during his life.

How can she be charged with truancy when mandatory school age requirement is 6 in Georgia? Government thinks it holds title to your children when you put them in the government school. If that is true, it is institutional slavery of children until they are 16 (or end-age of mandatory attendance requirements).

I have no issue with the corporal punishment, but this did give me pause:

” Her son has had 18 unexcused absences this school year and she was once arrested for his truancy. “

School attendance isn’t required for those under 6 years old in Georgia - K and Pre-K are voluntary.

Ga Code Ann:
§ 20-2-690.1. Mandatory education for children between ages six and 16

(a) Mandatory attendance in a public school, private school, or home school program shall be required for children between their sixth and sixteenth birthdays. Such mandatory attendance shall not be required where the child has successfully completed all requirements for a high school diploma.

Obviously something missing from the story if the mother of a 5 year old has been charged with truancy.

Unacceptable. 18 days is not overly horrible. Some kids go on vacation for two weeks and that’s 10 days right there. The mother should have chosen jail over the kid getting abused by the Georgia prinicipal.

If I had kids that were continually acting badly in school, I'd want them paddled to help them learn that there are consequences for bad behavior. But without my permission, no one is going to lay a hand on my kid.

Knowing that the paddle or in my case at home, the hand, was enough to keep me in line. My older brother was spanked, I don’t know how often, but once it was for using the “n” word. I was spanked once, by my mother who cried the whole time, because when this same brother came home from the hospital and was still healing from a compound fracture, I pulled the chair out from under him causing him to fall. And yes, I did it on purpose. I was about 9. I don’t know whether my other brother was ever spanked. I doubt it.

The little thug needed a good paddling since mama doesn’t want to be a responsible parent.

I got paddled plenty of times at school. Permission was neither requested or needed and neither of my parents was ever present. I survived. And I have no criminal history either as a juvenile or an adult. Imagine that.
