..Czech leaders, fed up with their countrys long and complicated full name, have proposed changing it to a single word with just three syllables: Czechia.
In a joint statement, the president, prime minister and other senior officials said they would ask the UN to update its database of geographical names with the new title, in the hope that it might take root before the country competes in the Olympics this summer.
Although some Czech Republic sporting teams have long been referred to with a single word, Czech (the national ice hockey team have the word emblazoned on their jerseys), this variant along with others including Czechlands and Bohemia were seemingly overlooked by officials.
A new myth-busting website called Go Czechia assures readers that the name is not a neologism, and was in fact first uttered in Latin back in 1634 (its first English use came in 1841).
I use the word Czechia because it sounds nicer and its shorter than the cold Czech Republic, Zeman told then president Shimon Peres on an official visit to Israel.

and that this is the way the country is called in various Slavic languages -- and finally that Bohemia is one part of Czechia besides Moravia
incidentally, Poland was called for some time Lechistan and is still called as such in Turkic languages
I agree with this. It’s much easier to say.
I think they are called Czechia (or variants) in some European languages already like Greek, Spanish, etc:

I know there was a failed campaign by Turkey to have “Turkiye” (or some such) be the name in English (because Turkey evokes the bird) but that never took hold.
republic remind me too much of the USSR
In english, Czech Republic sounds like a respectable and honorable name for a nation. ‘Czechia’ sounds stupid and contrived by a committee bent on some sort of weird political correctness.
“republic remind me too much of the USSR”
Like Free Republic?
No. This is a real republic.
One that doesn’t know the difference between the real thing and the propaganda in the term USSR needs a lot of schooling.
La República Checa = Spanish
La République tchèque = French
I believe the first above is also what it is in Portuguese.
No more Czechklosovakia.
The native foods will taste the same.
Well you better get busy then.
Turkiye is a very dignified spelling. Too bad it didn’t catch on. I’ll bet if they tried it today, the change would take, since more seem concerned about style and appearance vs substance and purpose.
does your mom know you’re on the board?
you’ll never wake up for school. :)
you’re turn but after your next insult i’m calling a truce :)
and make it a good one, since its the last :)
The United States is a republic, if you can keep it.
It’s what the Germans call the country already. I guess the old Germanic name “Bohemia” sounds too Teutonic.
Seems less and less every day.
The Fed is a HUGE MONSTER that grows and grows and grows!
