Outrage after big labor crafts law paying their members less than non-union workers
Los Angeles Times ^ | April 9, 2016 | Peter Jamison

... Under an obscure provision of the city's wage hike, unionized hotels were granted an exemption allowing them to pay their employees less...

... a series of loopholes that cut union workers out of the very pay increases their leaders have championed...

San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland and Santa Monica have all adopted union waivers in their most recent minimum wage laws...

At the Sheraton Universal Hotel, a longtime union property, bellhops, waiters and banquet servers make California's current minimum wage: $10 an hour...

Those doing the same jobs at a non-union Hilton less than 500 feet away make at least $15.37 under the city's hotel wage law...

Echoing other dissatisfied union members, Chito Zamayla, a 61-year-old Sheraton bellhop, said the city should repeal the labor carve-out from its hotel minimum-wage law. That would immediately put him and his co-workers on equal footing with employees of non-union businesses.

"It's not right. I've been with the union for 10 years, and I've paid my dues for 10 years," Zamayla said. "And in the meantime, I'm losing $12,000 a year."

They did the same thing in Seattle. The idea is to “encourage” non-union businesses to unionize.

I do jobs for cities that require me to pay the “prevailing wage”. It is much higher than a union employee would make.

Maybe the unions are trying to drive the non-union hotels out of business... ?

The cost of doing business just went way up for non-union hotels...

non-union hotel goes belly up and their workers get hired at the union hotel and pay dues...

I can see how in a union thug mind that would be a good thing...

Well ain't that a shame. Wait until they start paying for Obamacare -- and they will of course blame those who voted against it and insurance companies. Thanks grundle.

No, the “community organizing” class want the churn of hatred and discontent. The idea is to make people feel like they are always unsettled, never sure of their footing. The people doing this are very good at working at being the minions of Lucifer...errrrr....I mean Alinsky.

that’s right, Mr. Chito. Your union screwed you with their attempt to blackmail businesses into going union - and Governor Moonbeam, Pelosi, Boxer and Feinstein and the Dem Party was behind it all. Your union is going to try to turn you against the non-union businesses, to distract you, but there’s another thing to do - run the Dem politicians out of California. Vote Trump!

Add this to their exemptions to Obama’s new regulations to shutting down 401Ks over time, exemptions to Obamacare and preferences for government contracts, and you clearly get a federal government that privileges unions over everyone else.
And unlike most areas, he’s been consistent in unions versus everyone else, including the GM bankruptcy.

Wait until you retire, Mr. Chito. Then you’ll REALLY regret giving them money to negotiate for you.
