The number of New Yorkers registered to vote over the last five months has barely budged despite the state’s hotly contested April 19 presidential primaries, new figures show.
There were 5,792,497 registered Democrats as of April 1 — a puny increase of 14,037 since November, state Board of Elections show. The Republican Party had 2,731,688 members, up just 12,358 over the same period.
The stagnant registration numbers are “very depressing, but not surprising,” said Barbara Bartoletti of the League of Women Voters.
She blamed New York’s election laws, which discourage ballot access.
Bartoletti said she is already getting complaints from New Yorkers who now realize they can’t vote in the primaries because they missed the March 25 registration deadline.

Cry me a freaking river. Pennsylvania's registration deadline was one week earlier for a primary one week later. And we will still have no shortage of morons showing up to vote.

Most liberals think people should be automatically registered to vote, and even that the establishment should vote FOR them.

Wow. The deadline for changing parties was October 15th?
The deadline for changing parties is WAY before we know who is on the ballot in a primary. And if you are a registered Conservative - you can’t vote in the presidential primary. Usually for NYers it doesn’t even matter by the time our primary rolls around, so most don’t bother to vote. This year is the first in many decades that we will have a voice. I changed my reg about a year ago so I could vote in a local primary. Missed the date (seems to MOVE about mysteriously) but as the dude I wanted to vote for was going to be the only republican on the ballot it wasn’t a big deal. Funny thing is I mailed the request to change well before the deadline, but got notice back that I didn’t make the deadline.
I double checked and my husband and I are all set.
But it is easy to register and not realize you have not selected a party - so that would mean no voting in the primary. Probably what a lot of Bernie fans are finding out now.
Oh, and in NY you can register as Indie, no party selected, Conservative, Republican, Liberal,Green Party, Democrat and a couple more I think.
Woe are those that register as other than Repub or Dem as they cannot vote in any primary that does not run a candidate in one of the other parties. No cross-over votes in NY.
