Across Switzerland, there was a surge in people applying for gun permits in 2015. Was crime a driver?
Switzerland is becoming safer. Police recently flagged up that crime rates fell by 7% in 2015, reaching a seven-year low. In 2014, homicide was actually at its lowest level in 30 years.
Most homicides are carried out with sharp instruments like knives. Between 2012 and 2014 homicides and homicide attempts by guns decreased from a high of 51. But in 2015, the number doubled - from 18 to 36.
The number of serious injuries with a gun has remained the same since 2011, and after a spike in 2014 fell 64% last year. It should be noted that just 3% of serious injuries last year were a result of a gun most involved a sharp instrument or physical violence.

First rule of thumb is don’t believe anything from a government allowing Islamic savages to colonize the country.
The Hills are alive, with the sound of Jihad.
“...gun permits” ?
"Obwalden police commented that the rise in permits could largely be attributable to the trend toward using a variety of weapons at shooting ranges, which would require more permits. Other explanations might be the traditional gun-friendly culture in rural areas of Switzerland, with many people collecting guns, and the strong Swiss franc versus the very moderate price of second-hand weapons."
All factors, I'm sure... but not the primary one that looms over all others - people are losing their trust in the police to keep them safe. Not necessarily because the police are incompetent, but more likely because the national government is placing them under an impossible burden.
I do hope that the first factor listed above is true. The Swiss have had a proud legacy of marksmanship skills with rifles, but often looked askance at the private ownership of handguns. This, despite manufacturing some of the finest handguns on the planet. If Swiss "gun culture" is broadening, that's good news.
Moron press drones-- more guns in the hands of decent individuals necessarily leads to less crime.
Luv those Schmidt-Rubin straight pull bolt action rifles.
Yeah, thankfully, we live in free states, so we don’t have to deal with “gun permits”. I think soon my state will go Constitutional Carry like our neighbor did, so we won’t have to have a permit to carry concealed, either.
Me too, love me some K31.
I wonder how long it will take for Missouri to follow the lead. My “permit” is the 2nd Amendment, backed by the Heller decision on the individual RKBA.
Black market source for much of the rest of Europe. My guess.
[[Switzerland is becoming safer. ]]
Might wanna inform the women and children who are begin raped by muslim ‘refugees/rapists’ that their country is now ‘safer’
Yup. The Swiss are not as wide open about firearms as a lot of people think. Permits? It’s called the 2nd Amendment in the U.S. At least it used to be.
Since December of 2010 you have needed a weapons permit to buy arms. The so called free category that used to exist is no longer.
This even applies now to soldiers retiring form the service, there rifle, though given to them has to be on a weapons permit.
One word: Islam.
The Swiss won’t go quietly into the night.
This story sounds somewhat like the NY Times story from some years ago by Times columnist Fox Butterworth who wondered why we were sending so many people to prison when the crime rates were going down.
They are preparing for an impending invasr..
They already have some guns - that’s the reason for the “lower crime”.
The Swiss have repeatedly confirmed Robert A. Heinlein’s dictum: An armed society is a polite society. The Muslim trash don’t stand a chance.
So I’ve noticed.
‘swhy I made my last purchase from an individual, not a dealer.
