"I got in the golf business, started working at the PGA Village, got a phone call and started working up at Trump National in Bedminster, New Jersey."
It was there, in 2006, that the owner of the course, American celebrity entrepreneur Donald Trump, spurred Herman to try again at a professional career.
"At Trump I was an assistant pro, tournament ops, things like that," Herman recalled. "I got into a nice conversation with Donald, Mr. Trump, one day.
"He's like, 'Why are you folding shirts and giving lessons? Why aren't you on the Tour? I've played with tour players, you're good enough.'
"I don't know, maybe something like that gives you more confidence."
In his second year at Trump, Herman finally qualified for the second-tier Web.com tour, with the Trump logo featuring on his shirt and golf bag, and he went on to play his rookie season on the PGA Tour in 2011.
"He (Trump) has been very influential in getting me to the tour," said Herman. "It's nice playing out here. I definitely enjoy it better than the golf shop."

Yes, it is amazing the lives that have been favorably influenced by such a boorish, bombastic, blowhard who is only looking out for himself! ;-)
Winners win.
Winners can spot winners.
Very heartwarming. So happy for him! Just a bit of the power of positive thinking at work!
One reason I think a Trump cabinet would be the best thing to happen to this country in years. He wouldn't pick losers (loo-sahs!), that's for sure.
Great story. Happy for him.
This is how you win people over to Trump. Show the good things that he has actually done and don’t rely on gossip or tabloids to smear other candidates. Good job! Keep it up! perhaps some of the others on the forum will learn this example...
Ping!!
Does Ted play golf? Maybe he’s good enough for the tour too, well, SCotUS anyway..
I know, how sad was it the other day when the media was ripping on Trump for trying to be optimistic for the lady dying of cancer? TDS at its worst.
Jim Herman story ping...
BTTT!!
Nice story even has a happy ending :)
GMTA!!!
;-)
Eyep..that course is about 16 miles from me.
I start back at my job on Tuesday..*smiles* i mow fairways at Flanders Valley....
Herman who?
Hes been influential in getting me to the Tour, Herman said at last year’s The Honda Classic, where he was an early leader
Earlier in his professional life, Jim Herman was the assistant head professional at Trump National in Bedminster, N.J. One day, he had a conversation with the now Republican presidential frontrunner about his career, and it turned everything around for Herman.
Got into a nice conversation with Donald, Mr. Trump, one day, Herman said last February. Hes like, `Why are you folding shirts and giving lessons? Why aren’t you on the Tour? I’ve played with Tour players, you’re good enough.
I don’t know, maybe something like that gives you more confidence. It’s nice playing out here. I definitely enjoy it better than the golf shop.
And now he’ll enjoy the spoils of becoming a PGA Tour winner with an invite to the Masters and a seven-figure payday.
This, I believe is often true. I’m not such a successful person, but I have met others who are. When at top of their game, many develop almost a 6th sense for potential talent yet to be mined. Look at Oprah, and all the behind the scene people we would never have heard of, if not for her promotion.
