Ted Cruz lashed out at Donald Trump on Wednesday for saying that women who get abortions illegally should be punished.
"Of course we shouldn’t be talking about punishing women; we should affirm their dignity and the incredible gift they have to bring life into the world,” he added. Trump was asked what a nationwide ban on abortion would look like in an interview with MSNBC's Chris Matthews.
“The answer is that there has to be some form of punishment,” Trump said.
“For the woman?” Matthews asked.
“Yeah, there has to be some form,” Trump responded.
Trump's comments sparked a firestorm. The celebrity businessman later attempted to walk back the comments in a statement released later on Wednesday.
“If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman,” Trump said.
“The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed — like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.”

Trump isn’t running for Congress in some hard-red district in Oklahoma. He’s trying to win every red state and several swing states: FL, OH, IA, VA, etc. Folks on FR might think calling for legal punishment of women getting abortions is some kind of mighty truth telling, and maybe it is, but in those states (and in a bunch of red ones) in 2016, it’s a prescription for tears and a concession speech.

Cruz’s statement about Trump and what he said about abortion makes Cruz sound like the biggest liberal in the world. He knows full well Trump was asked about abortion being illegal and if it was should women be punished. But Cruz left that little part out. Then he starts sounding like any other liberal in politics, saying how the woman should never be held at fault. Well dammit before 1973 a woman who aborted her baby was committing a crime and crime carries punishment. There’s a reason why this weasel is called Lying Ted. This is a prime example.

Wisely, Mr. Trump takes no advice from anybody. He doesn’t need it, because he is very smart and has developed several hotels, resorts and golf courses.
You have Cruz mixed up with Trump. Trump has already back-walked his original statement.
If you don’t want to rile up the Trumpies, don’t say anything conservative.
