A man trying to save a dog from an oncoming train was struck and killed after he pushed the dog off the tracks, authorities said.

The man, described as being in his early 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The dog avoided injury.

The incident took place behind the property at the end of Gomes Road just northeast of Johansen High School, which is on Claus Road.

The man was walking along Dry Creek with the dog and a woman when he took the dog off the leash, according to Lt. Marc Nuno of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

The large dog, reported as a boxer or bullmastiff mix, ran toward the tracks as a train, estimated to be going about 45 mph, was rushing closer. The man ran to the tracks and pushed the dog out of the way, but then was struck.

I love dogs as much as anyone, but if you’re going to save a dog, make damn sure you aren’t going to get killed in the process. It’s not a fair trade.

So sad. I’m sure there will be those who mock and make fun of his death, but just remember he was someone’s son. He didn’t make a wise choice and paid the ultimate price for it.

It was an unfortunate outcome but he was still brave.

Pets are not interchangeable, we have feelings for them and feel responsible for them.

Our family had an incident on a train track that thank God turned out okay. BUT - trains are DANGEROUS. Most people, including us at the time were not as careful as we should have been.

Streets are always filled with cars so everyone is pretty careful. “Train tracks? Heck - I hardly ever see a train on them. Are they still even used!?”

“Pets are not interchangeable, we have feelings for them and feel responsible for them. “

Yes! Our current four-legged companion is lying a the door to my office as this is being written. She has been with us for now almost ten years, and I would do a lot to try and save her life. For what she’s given me, I owe her.

I remember being taught that the oncoming train is coming fast then you think.

You look down and see the train but it looks a long way off. Then bam is there.

It was unfortunate the man was killed in the process of saving his dog.
Pets are not "replaceable" with a duplicate animal. They are each unique.

When I’m going down the highway and an animal runs in front of my car I apply some pressure to the brakes But I don’t do anything drastic. A couple of times my kids asked me if I didn’t like animals and my reply has always been “No, I like rabbits just fine, I just love you guys more!”
