A pair of local scientists say climate change may bring one more thing to worry about: rock slides from out of the blue.
It's a caution they raised this month after studying a high cliff in Yosemite National Park to find out why mountainous rocks fall from high places for no obvious reason.
"There are often rockfalls that happen on beautiful, sunny summer days and there is often no explanation: no rain, earthquakes or any other obvious explanation," said Brian Collins, a researcher at the U.S. Geological Survey.
They concluded that daily and seasonal fluctuations in temperature led to expansions and contractions of the rock that were, over time, enough to trigger a potentially hazardous rockfall.
"Over time, the cracks are going to become bigger and bigger and bigger and ultimately result in a rockfall."

If global warming results in more "beautiful, sunny summer days", then keep it coming. I'll take my chances with the mountain rock slides.
Obvious.
Acts of Allah...
Erosion.
New concept. The geologists are on the case.
Chalk this one up as one of the Top 10 stupidest “studies” of all time.
How many ice age cycles have we had in the last 100,000 years?
And they figure those didn’t cause more rockslides???
Damned climate change fools....
Maybe someone should tell them that water is wet and fire burns....
There is nothing that climate change can’t do. If only we could focus it’s power for good!
Scientists also expect more flat tires with climate change...more creaky doors...more stopped-up sinks...
So does this mean Captain Kirk should not go rock climbing in Yosemite (like he was in the opening scenes of that awful “Final Frontier” Star Trek movie)?
Gaya doesn’t like all of the people climbing on her rocks.
Climate change will also increase the chances of a major asteroid strike from space.
“...find out why mountainous rocks fall from high places for no obvious reason.”
Isaac Newton had a theory that may apply.
Geologist are wondering about this phenomenon? Those guys that lean on shovels as you drive pass know that cold, water and heat produce expansions and contractions which lead to potholes. Same principle.
So, it’s “global warming” that’s cracking my driveway, and not the ice freezing in the cracks. I’m glad I read this.../s.
Sob...there were no rockfalls until I bought my Expedition. The world was such a beautiful and safe place until I came along. So long, sweet world. I’ll take my just desserts, now.
So SUV exhaust could also cause rockfalls in space. Increased rocks falling out of the skies could be the doom of our so called civilization. We need to give up all that we know and hide in caves for the good of scientists.
What is the credentialing for these so called “scientists” and where is the peer reviewed work that substantiates this conclusion?
And here I thought that unrest on campuses was not really affecting physical science departments.
Seems I’ve been living in a fool’s paradise.
