A Reading, MA, man with dozens of prior arrests stood bloodied today before a district court judge facing charges that he held his girlfriend against her will, beat her, cut her hair with a knife, and threatened to slit her throat if she altered authorities.
Woburn District Court Judge Stacey Fortes ordered Brian English, 30, held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing after prospectors described a harrowing ordeal during which they say English kept his on-again, off-again girlfriend hostage in his home for more than two hours early Saturday morning. English struck her across the face with an open hand, kicked her repeatedly in the sides, and threatened her with two steak knifes, using one of them to cut off a clump of her hair, prosecutors said.
If I go to jail for this, Ill find you and slit your throat, English told the victim, according to the police report.
The victim was finally able to climb out of a window when English was not paying attention and escaped the home with Englishs mother, court records show. During the assault, the victim said she begged her assailants mother to call the police and to ask her son to stop hitting her, which the mother did not do, court records show.
The victim fled to Lawrence General Hospital in Medford, and police were called to the emergency room there.
She told police that English had no friends and no job and likely was in Boston getting high, according to court records.
About 10 hours later, late Sunday night, Reading police arrested English after he crashed his car, allegedly while under the influence of drugs.
Prosecutors have charged English with kidnapping, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, witness intimidation, and larceny, as well as driving under the influence, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and failure to stop for police.
Police say English was treated at a hospital following the car crash. He stood before the judge with dried blood ringing his mouth and chin. He wore a hospital gown over his sweatshirt and was breathing heavily and dabbing his face with a tissue during the brief hearing.
English spoke twice, to say good afternoon to the judge at the beginning of the proceeding and to thank the judge at the end.
A clerk in Woburn District Court said English has dozens of prior cases dating back to 2002. They include a restraining order taken out by a different woman as well as arrests for assault and battery, breaking and entering, larceny, and drug charges, the clerk said.
"prospectors"?
...someday his going to meet some woman’s brothers...it’s a wonder it hasn’t happened
-—if she altered authorities.

don’t be “altering” the authorities
This will make a great movie on The Lifetime Channel.
The Herald has to buy a more competent computer proofreader, copy editor.
Yet, early on she decided to socialize with this loser in the first place. No job, no friends, no nothing. The story says the girl escaped ‘with his mother’?
The same mother who refused to defend her against being beat up? This is like Alice through the Looking Glass, while on meth!
if she altered authorities. ??????????.................
Yes, they are the ‘altered’ authorities....................
;^)
Had to leave something for other posters...the writing in that “article” is a mess...almost incomprehensible.
Ha! Makes perfect sense now!
As a baby:
Poor little darling. She needs to get a Restraining Order and waive it in his face when he comes to slit her throat.
On second thought - a high caliber revolver fully loaded with her having some serious range time just might suit her needs better.
Yeah. I’m convinced. Option Two is the better call.
writer probably has a masters in journalism...
Why are some women attracted to low life scum like this?
Their editor/proof-readers should be fired.
She’ll probably go back to him once he’s out on bail. Then he’ll kill her.
Theodore Dalrymple suggests that it’s because they have no education, no interests, no goals in life, no need to struggle to survive. Therefore, they seek out thug boyfriends because the excitement provides some relief from boredom.
I can only speculate, because I don’t really know.
Maybe some abused women go back into that sort of hell, because they don’t think anybody else wants them, or because they believe ‘they (the victim) somehow deserve to meet this sort of fate.
And then there are the relationships where both partners alternatively abuse each other. In Hollywood, this was depicted in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe?” with Taylor and Burton. Many of this category of relationship are intertwined with substance abuse of some kind.
