Today was Western Saturday for the Democrats while the GOP hopefuls had the day free to continue working the refs in Wisconsin. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders did battle again in Washington state, Alaska and Hawaii. All three of them are caucus states, a format which has given Hillary some trouble in the past and would prove poisonous to her once again this weekend. (One interesting note is that the only place where Clinton did any paid television advertising was in the Aloha State.)
The results began coming in relatively early and Bernies streak in caucus states only expanded. Sanders was the early projected winner in Alaska by a staggering margin of 79-21 with roughly three quarters of precincts reporting. Hillary didnt do much better in Washington, losing to Sanders 76-24 when the race was called with about 1/3 reporting. Alaska has just 16 pledged delegates, but Washington has 101.
Alaska is very difficult to poll on the best of days and the most recent numbers we had were from January, when the candidates were in a virtual tie within the margins. But the system seemed designed for Bernie to exceed expectations and the turnout at most precincts was reported to be much higher than normal, so that clearly worked to Sanders favor.
Hawaii has 24 of delegates and nobody seemed to be making very firm projections there either. The caucus doesnt even begin until 7 pm eastern, so Ill probably just add an update in the morning for how that goes.
As a strange side note, nobody had done any polling in Washington (which seems odd for such a delegate rich state) but the Sanders people were on every network talking about the massive turnout, particularly among younger voters. This was the big fish of the day and Sanders seemed to feel that if they could chalk up a YUGE win and take most of those delegates he could be back on the path to victory.
Color me skeptical. Sanders still has to overcome not just Clintons current pledged delegate lead, but the hundreds of superdelegates she has locked down. In theory they could change their minds, but these arent rank and file voters. Theyre all party regulars who will probably be unwilling to risk the wrath of the Clintons political machine. And unless Sanders can translate todays victories into some actual momentum hell be heading back to the northeast and midwestern states soon where Clinton performs much better. Frankly, unless she gets indicted I dont see the superdelegates abandoning ship in enough numbers to let Bernie take the nomination in Philadelphia.
Trust me - even Donald isn’t dumb enough to self-fund a losing campaign.
Yes, Bwana.
Meaningless...Alaska has 7 people and some white bears...Washington, like Minnesota is U.S.Moscow....Putin is loved there.
Bernie Sanders is beating Trump worse than Hillary head to head. Trumpnhas a huge uphill battle with Hillary, why would he want Sanders whodoesnt have the baggage Hillary has?
“Right now both frontrunners: Clinton & Trump are looking weak and vulnerable.”
Wrong on both counts!
So what happens if Bernie finishes with more earned delegates than Hillary, but Hillary ends ahead solely because of her superdelegates? Will superdelegates switch or is it just FU to the Bernie voters, and Hillary gets the nomination regardless?
Actually that’s a best-case scenario. It might piss of the Bernie loons enough to depress November turnout.
Leftwing whites prefer Bernie. Clinton soars where there are lots of Black voters, and to a lesser extent, Hispanics. I see more gains ahead on the calendar for Bernie the commie.
Sanders is not going to win the primary but will keep it competitive enough and enough bragging rights to keep Dems over there. I want him to run a stron 40% in a 2-way race in the Democrat primary until June.
If Clinton had already sealed the primary by now all these bored liberal Democrats would be in the GOP primary voting against Trump.
The Bernie polls are insane. No way he is beating everybody by 20 points.
I wonder if the Asians of Hawaii will be the demographic edge of Bernie’s suppor with Asians being marginally less lapdog to the Democrat leadership than black or Hispanic voters.
Trump won the Asian islands of Hawaii & Northern Mariana.
They will wail and gnash their teeth over his death.
Hillary: “Nothing personal, Bernie. Just business!”
I was starting to feel sorry for the Dems. Who to vote for? The so called Crook or Commie. Then I realized, that they will just ignore the facts and float along on their own little planet. JMO
Looking at the upcoming contests, I see a decent chance for Bernie to pull even with Shrillary on pledged (won) delegates or perhaps even surpass her.
So if that is the case and it ends up being the super delegates that put her on top at the convention, that will be an awkward to win to say the least. And it will seriously piss off the under 30 crowd, many of which will either sit home or even vote Trump (out of spite) in November.
Me. When they trashed Sen Joe McCarthy. HE WAS RIGHT. The Idiot Dems are the fellow travelers.
I think weve got the best of both worlds. Bernie beating the cr*p out of Hitlery in state after state after state. Let that keep happening. The delegate gap is totally stacked against Bernie, so hell never win. So, Hitlery is stalked by Bernie and constantly losing to Bernie, weakening her, and showing how unpopular she is to the whole Country.
Meanwhile Bernie, the Commie/Socialist, will never win and therefore be any threat to our Country. Now, barring incredibly dirty tricks, Trump will be our Primary candidate. We want a beaten up, weak Hitlery to be his opponent, as Trump will then make mincemeat out of her. So, all is well. Bernie weakens Hitlery, and then Trump comes in to beat her to a pulp. Win, win.
Bet they are but they are committed to her. Personally, I think she will blow it. And I have money out on that.
I knew The Bern was going to be big in WA.
Oregon will go the same
Quite a schlonging..
WASHINGTON: Bernie 72.3 Hillary 27.6 “
In the Seattle region I have seen no Hillary stickers, lots of Sanders. South of Seattle on our protest overpasses between the airport and Seattle, Sanders supporters and banners.
