U.S. government approves sale of $3.2B worth of Boeing 'sub-killers' to UK

The U.S. government has approved sale of up to nine P-8 maritime patrol and strike aircraft to the United Kingdom, a new export sale for the popular Boeing (NYSE: BA) military jet.

The British deal will be worth up to $3.2 billion, according to Reuters.

Boeing also exports the so-called "sub killers" to Australia and India. There's a market for the jets in countries with large coastlines. The approval, while not unexpected, is a boost to the Puget Sound region.

Boeing assembles the 737-based aircraft at its Renton site on a production line separate from the commercial 737s. Boeing then flies the jets to a finishing facility adjacent to Boeing Field, where they are turned to warcraft.

The UK government announced its plans to buy the jets in November.

It’s about time...
The Liberals in the UK thought they could get by without sub-chasers, because... well, just because.

The Russians showed them otherwise, by popping up right next to their INLAND Nuke Sub base, and they had to call the FRENCH for help.

I’m still partial to the P2V. That flying machine just looked mean! ;-)

Skimming 50 ft above the water and hearing the thumps as the sonobuoys are deployed from a P3 is an interesting experience. I wonder if the P8 deploys in that fashion.

Not really. The new-generation Nimrods were cancelled when nearly ready to fly as part of massive cuts in government expenditure across all spending departments to reduce the budget deficit. This happened soon after the Con/Lib Dem coalition replaced Labour in 2010. Defence spending, although cut, got off relatively lightly compared with some other departments: but the Nimrod cancellation was a relatively minor casualty in this much larger operation. Sp the decision was entirely financially driven, had nothing to do with dogma around defence.

The Nimrod is a pretty effective sub hunter isn’t it?
Cool looking with all the do-dads sticking out of it.
