A transcript of Donald Trump’s meeting with The Washington Post editorial board
The Washington Post ^ | March 21 2016

HIATT: So what do you think China’s aims are in the South China Sea?

TRUMP: Well I know China very well, because I deal with China all the time. I’ve done very well. China’s unbelievably ambitious. China is, uh… I mean, when I deal with China, you know, I have the Bank of America building, I’ve done some great deals with China. I do deals with them all the time on, you know, selling apartments, and, you know, people say ‘oh that’s not the same thing.’ The level of… uh, the largest bank in the world, 400 million customers, is a tenant of mine in New York, in Manhattan. The biggest bank in China. The biggest bank in the world.

China has got unbelievable ambitions. China feels very invincible. We have rebuilt China. They have drained so much money out of our country that they’ve rebuilt China. Without us, you wouldn’t see the airports and the roadways and the bridges; I mean, the George Washington Bridge is like, that’s like a trinket compared to the bridges that they’ve built in China. We don’t build anymore, and it, you know, we had our day. But China, if you look at what’s going on in China, you know, they go down to seven percent or eight percent and it’s like a national catastrophe. Our GDP is right now zero. Essentially zero.

-snip-

RYAN: You [MUFFLED] mentioned a few minutes earlier here that you would knock ISIS. You’ve mentioned it many times. You’ve also mentioned the risk of putting American troop in a danger area. If you could substantially reduce the risk of harm to ground troops, would you use a battlefield nuclear weapon to take out ISIS?

TRUMP: I don’t want to use, I don’t want to start the process of nuclear. Remember the one thing that everybody has said, I’m a counterpuncher. Rubio hit me. Bush hit me. When I said low energy, he’s a low-energy individual, he hit me first. I spent, by the way he spent 18 million dollars’ worth of negative ads on me. That’s putting [MUFFLED]…

RYAN: This is about ISIS. You would not use a tactical nuclear weapon against ISIS?

[CROSSTALK]

TRUMP: I’ll tell you one thing, this is a very good looking group of people here.  Could I just go around so I know who the hell I’m talking to?

So, who do you trust? One after another elected republicans has violated the trust of the people that elected them. Can you trust Trump to build a wall and get control of illegal immigration? Can you trust Trump to reform taxes and trim the budget? Can you trust Trump to support the military and address the problems at the VA? Can you trust Trump to defend the second amendment? Can you trust Trump to reduce government regulation and interference in the economy?

Republicans have been winning house and senate elections for years and then doing nothing but surrender. One thing you can definitely trust about Trump, he won’t surrender.

He did, you didn’t understand his answer...trade, trade, trade...that is the strategic key to China, historically and today

Exactly. He then went on to explain that every achievement China has reached in recent history has been financed by us thru our lopsided trade deals. So his answer is that if we take away that advantage we take away China's ability to expand and create these islands. Without any kind of risky military aspect needed.

Pretty obvious to me, but then my reading comprehension has always been above average. I suppose if there is a criticism to be made here it is that Trump should be phrasing his replies in simple and obvious terms that can be grasped by the average media type. And a sizable portion of FReeperdom, apparently. :/

Nope, done’t trust Trump. I will never trust Trump. And nothing you or any of his sycophants say will convince me otherwise.

Please check out my post at #43. China’s expansion has been financed by us thru our lopsided trade deals. Take away that advantage and you take away China’s ability to fund these structures that support their military expansion. So the answer is an economic, not military one, which I believe is preferable, as would Japan, Taiwan, and other actors in the region, one would assume.

In the Republican debates, Cruz would not sink to insults and name-calling. In the Presidential debates, he will eviscerate Hillary since the level of discourse will be higher and focused on policy differences.

I've heard all about how smart Ted is and how he is a champion debater. Maybe so... in a formal debate with judges scoring points.

That is not what a "presidential debate is".

The presidential debates are not a comparison of policy differences. If you believe that, you will continue to be disappointed. Cruz lost every debate with the public. Cruz would do the same in the general election. He has a hard time communicating with real people and connecting with them. He is at his best when trying to be Reagan, but he comes off as a creepy imitation and not an authentic person.

I doubt he will be in the general debate. Not enough people want him.

And yet he is winning the majority of delegates in the primary and hitting new highs in the poll.

First, he is not winning the majority of the delegates. Less than fifty percent is not a majority.

Second, the new RCP Average shows Hillary widening the gap between herself an Trump and winning the national election.

A vote for Trump in the primaries seems to be a vote for Hillary in the general election.

Not really. It's far worse than that. People read into his comments whatever they themselves want to hear. He thus becomes everything to everyone. The last successful presidential candidate to do this was named Obama.

It is human nature to project onto a candidate one's hopes and dreams and fears. It is what Ted supporters do today.

Yes, you can only trust people who have started their political careers in the George W Bush campaign, moved on to helping GWB get elected in court, moved on to being an administrator in the GWB administration, gone back to Texas to be the lawyer for Texas, ran for Senator from Texas, and started running for President in you first term as Senator! Yes! This is the kind of person one can really trust to restore Conservative values to the country!

First, he is not winning the majority of the delegates. Less than fifty percent is not a majority.

OK, let's be technical. The result is he is still beating the crap out of Cruz and that Ohio Governor. If it makes you feel better to say it this way, I will help.

Second, the new RCP Average shows Hillary widening the gap between herself an Trump and winning the national election.

Hillary hasn't had the wood taken to her yet. She will be beaten like a rented mule. Trump still has to eliminate Cruz and the Ohio Governor.

A vote for Trump in the primaries seems to be a vote for Hillary in the general election.

Yes, only a Cruz supporter or an Ohio Governor supporter believes that.

I have watched Cruz in his town hall meetings connecting very well with real people. He is my choice.

While it is true, the current trade structure with China has enabled them in many ways and to some degree there is certainly an economic application. But the more immediate issue is a military one, so on the contrary, there most assuredly IS a military component to the response (military aid to the other affected countries in the region). And I maintain Trump has no understanding in that arena.

As for trade, it's one thing to strut around and make statement after statement about "getting tough" with the Chinese, but I'm sure even Trump himself knows the ramifications of risking a trade war with them.

You're giving Trump wayyy too much credit for answering a question he failed to adequately address.

And you're thinking Hillary and her media enablers won't respond with ammunition from Trump's background as well?

Maybe the Washington Post should bring in a little REAL diversity with their staff - - get a few writers with world experience OUTSIDE of protected upper class enclaves and over protective parents.

I know what Trump's saying because I've known men of action... as opposed to (only) ‘men of thought’.

Just in case you wondered why and how an ‘award winning’ newspaper like the Post missed the revolution that happening on the right... the above is a hint...

And I don’t trust Cruz. He got a chance on two really big, clear-cut votes and blew both. I don’t feel like giving him a third chance.

His incredible lies today regarding what Trump makes me doubt anything he says. He used this tragedy to bash Trump! He responds to questions with answers that blame Trump or with an attack on Trump unrelated to the topic. It makes me wonder about his mental state. Sad to watch him unravel.

“And you’re thinking Hillary and her media enablers won’t respond with ammunition from Trump’s background as well? “

I do think so. Trump has proven he can withstand the fire more than any other candidate and expand his base.
