The tampon tax will be abolished by the summer, George Osborne announced last night.
The Chancellor said that legislation for a zero rate of VAT on women’s sanitary products will be introduced next week as part of the Finance Bill.
The move came after David Cameron was forced to beg EU chief Jean-Claude Juncker for permission to reduce the rate from the current 5 per cent minimum allowed under Brussels rules.
The prime minister had to use a European summit on the migrant crisis to plead for help on reducing British rates on female sanitary products.

So, a great rarity occurred. It’s not all that common for politicians to admit they’ve finally bled the taxpayers enough.
My goodness... a tax on an item that a fraction of the population only needs to use for a few days each month has been eliminated. What a way for a politician to appear generous without actually doing anything. The impact on government revenues will be minimal, as will the impact on household budgets.
Let me know when a politician does something to significantly reduce the burden of government on the working population. Better yet, let me know when the politicians start working on controlling the growth and size of government.
Yeah, I know, this article is from the UK. But government bloat is a problem on both sides of the pond, and so are politicians who don’t want to tackle it because doing so threatens their power.
I won’t be holding my breath waiting for real reforms.

Am I reading this correctly that there’s an additional tax on tampons? If so, is there also an additional tax on pads, cups, and incontinence products?
My thought is that the VAT applies to everything, and they’re carving out an exception.
I love how these progressive meme’s seem to spread around the world at light speed. It’s almost as if there is co-ordination. Too bad conservatives can’t co-ordinate so much as a bake sale.

I just scanned wiki for the basic vat info. At first I thought it was a luxury tax applied to tampons, and I was confused because what they’re needed for is no luxury lol! Just through my quick scan, the EU taxes more items than the states of West Virginia and California combined. Yikes. I’d love to do an American history tour of France and maybe Belgium the summer after next. My kids will be 10, 7, and 5 and we’d take my folks. The more that I observe the situation, and not just the ridiculous taxes, the more I worry about never being able to see Normandy, Lafayette’s tomb, etc.

Conservatives were slow on the draw with social media, and that is how news is now spread. Just when we finally bow to the inevitable, there’s a new platform that people use. For example, Facebook was all the rage until about two or three years ago. NExt Twitter will go the way of Facebook. Instagram and Snapchat are what people are using the most right now. Many of the conservatives I know either refuse to use social media, or think Facebook is the bomb dot com. They will not move on to new platforms.

Remember that ObamaNoCare had a tax on tampons in it, until Princess Pelosi heard from several Republican women who read the bill and started to advertise that “blessing” and then the Princess lead the way to abolish the tampon tax, because it was “another Republican war on women” ignoring that ZERO Republicans voted for ObamaNoCare.
Also, there are many other ‘health appliance’ taxes in that bill, such as on virtually every medical device manufactured.
