The Caddyshack Collapse of the Establishment
Townhall.com ^ | 3/10/2016 | Matt Towery

Posted on 03/10/2016 4:20:24 AM PST by Servant of the Cross

Yes, I'm into my 15th month of writing that, like it or not, Donald Trump has the best chance to be the GOP nominee for president. That has left me and my analysis on the island of misfit toys! And during all of this, I've watched and chronicled about candidates who I know are well qualified, like Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio, but who have fallen by the wayside.

This past week, Mitt Romney and his many friends embarked on a plan that not only failed to stop Trump in Tuesday's primaries in Michigan and Mississippi, but actually appear to have boosted his cause. Here in Florida, Romney's recorded phone messages on behalf of Marco Rubio are going over like a lead balloon. The polling numbers in the Sunshine State prior to the Thursday debate show Trump's lead accelerating.

I completely understand that to Romney and a vast majority of longtime GOP pundits, consultants and elected officials, Trump seems like the Rodney Dangerfield of politics. They likely picture Trump as the late-comedian's iconic character Al Czervik in the 1980 comedy "Caddyshack." In the movie, Dangerfield plays a successful new-to-wealth real estate developer who slings insults at snooty members of an exclusive country club, and ends up in a high-stakes grudge golf match with the club's president.

Of course, Rodney's character prevails only after the groundskeeper, played by Bill Murray, blows up much of the entire golf course, thereby pushing Dangerfield's golf partner's ball into the cup for a last-minute victory. In the instance of Romney -- spokesman for the army of GOP powerbrokers who want to stop Trump -- it is hard to choose which of the movie's characters he would play in a remake. He certainly would be well-suited to portray the image-obsessed club president...

I love Caddyshack, hysterical.

but I didn’t like the “it’s us blacks, Italians, Irish, Jews etc. against the evil WASPS!!”

White anglo protestants have done so much for the country the list is impossible to make.

And i’m Italian Roman Catholic!!

maybe I should just enjoy it as a show. Rodney as hysterical.

One of the funniest movies ever. I laugh just remembering little parts of it :)

Here’s another laugh on good-natured Donald:

Somehow I see Mitt's character as the chief player in a booger consumption wager.

Call me Captain Obvious but the GOPe hates Trump because they will not be able to control him....and that makes me want him to be President all the more. Cruz comes in a far second because he, like Trey Gowdy in the House are all talk and no substance. Cruz will do what his masters want and most thinking people know that. We all thought that both of those gentlemen would be our saviors and shake up things in Washington but IT DIDN’T HAPPEN. GO TRUMP!

IIRC, Towery is a Georgia based pollster with his own company who’s been around a long time. However, I don’t remember him continuously predicting over a period of 15 months that Trump, like it or not, will get the nomination.

In fact, I find it hard to believe given his statement about Jeb and Rubio being ‘well-qualified’ (an implication that Trump is not, BTW).

Personally, I think Matt is trying to build up some “I told you so credibility” he can point back to when he goes begging for work from future political clients using this new “I predicted” meme. I just don’t buy it.

As for the Caddyshack analogy? Cute schtick hype come on designed to get readers and to make them remember his “predictions.”

Sigh...such nuggets of wisdom.

I’m at the point where I would describe the GOP as a fake WWE-wrestling organization which dreams up tifts and fights, which are fake but realistic. They use the news media about as much as the Democrats, and I’ve reached a point where I can’t really say there’s that much difference between the two parties. They represent something....it’s just not for the people back home and in their home district/state.

Stopped reading right there.

Just on their willingness to aid and abet the illegal invasion alone disqualifies these two.

President Choom gang Barry like to ply golf so much I bet he would love the hybrid grass Bill Murray’s groundskeeper character came up with.

“This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus belt that night on this stuff.”

They are well qualified, just not by their conservative bonafides.

Gee, the consultant class must be happy as clams b/c Mitt has good hair....and loves to show it off on TV. Who else but Mitt would have taken the dumb job the consultants dreamed up to save their sorry rears?

Frankly, I/m just hoping and praying Mitt/s hair stylist is anti-Trump. Heaven knows what an errant hair clipper might do?
