She has been the best-paid female athlete in the world for 11 years, earning more off the tennis court than on it. Not any more.
Maria Sharapova, 28, could now become the biggest financial loser in sporting history, missing out on estimated future earnings of as much as £100million ($142million).
Her biggest sponsors Nike, Porsche, and TAG Heuer all moved to cut ties with the Russian tennis star after she failed a drug test.
Sportswear giant Nike last night said it was putting its relationship with the five times Grand Slam winner on hold and was saddened and surprised by her conduct.
Porsche suspended promotional work with her, while watchmaker TAG Heuer said it would not be renewing Sharapovas contract.
Other firms who contribute to her staggering earnings are likely to follow suit. It is unlikely any firm will pay to be associated with such a high-profile drug cheat.
And as former Wimbledon winner Sharapova also faces a four-year ban from tennis she will be unable to earn any money on the court.
She will even have to pay back the £209,000 ($300,000) she earned for reaching the quarter-final of this years Australian Open the tournament at which she failed the test, and which now may prove to be her last.
By the time the ban is over she is likely to remain damaged goods as far as sponsors and advertisers are concerned.

What did she test positive for?
Maybe she is a saver/investor?
This all seems really excessive to me, unless I’m missing something. From what I read, the rules on this particular substance just changed in the last few months, and she claims she wasn’t aware of the change. Was it more involved than that?
Some sort of heart/endurance drug from the Eastern Baltic.
I’ll take care of her.
Everyone around her also missed it - doctors, coaches, agents, etc. Maybe there should be a better way of disseminating the information, especially for athletes that are using a drug primarily for health reasons.
Jen Capriati says she was doping for 10 years http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3481515/Capriati-angry-disappointed-Sharapova-drug-test.html
Wow, very major consequences for an UNINTENTIONAL mistake that could have been avoided had Sharapova (or her staff/advisors) read the DETAILS in correspondence from Tennis’ governing body.
Maybe she can be filmed in a Marriott and earn this back and more.
The sponsors are a bunch of filthy hypocrites
Her net worth has been reported at aprox. 195 million (2015), I don’t think she will go hungry.
why was she taking a heart ailment drug (in large doses) for 10 years that she didn’t need? Sounds like Rocky 4 to me...
It was a cardiac rehab drug that is widely prescribed in Europe, miscommunication, and I hand it to her, she took full responsibility and had no scapegoats. She will be OK, there are a heck of a lot more scummy athletes out there in Bradyland.
I bet I could live on what she has left over.
Also helps endurance....
If she never plays again...28 yrs. old, probably 50 million in the bank...oh noes, what a loser.\sarcasm. (No offense to poster intended.)
Is she the one who, everytime she hits the ball squeals like a stuck pig (or something).
