When we travel to Virginiat we purposely head south from the Twin Cities to avoid Madison/Chicago/Gary. It’s really simple, what do we want for scenery, wall to wall liberals killing each other off, or the corn fields of Iowa?
It adds a couple hours to the trip, but very relaxing.

No it doesn't...really....the traffic delays around Madison and the chaos through Chicago can easily cost a couple of hours....and even if the times were equal, the stress factor and the possibility of trouble even the scorecard!!!

When I head back that way, I take US 2 over to the UP, cross the Mackinac Bridge, and come down the 'middle finger' of the Lower Peninsula, to the Ohio Turnpike, then go east. That way I avoid the whole Illinois Tollway mess, and the drive is more relaxing.
I'm already close to the hi-line, so It doesn't cost much mileage wise.
