Republican Ted Cruz's hopes of a sweeping nominating victory in his home state of Texas are being eroded as Donald Trump taps into conservative anger over immigration.
Polls show Cruz, the U.S. senator from Texas, is poised to win the state's nominating contest on Tuesday - the biggest voting day so far in the 2016 race - a result seen as essential to keeping alive his chance of winning his party's nomination.
But he could be stopped short of thresholds required to sweep its 155 delegates to the Republican convention if national front-runner Trump and other rivals win enough of the vote.
Cruz needs as resounding a victory as possible to stay competitive on a day when Trump is expected to put in a dominant performance in other states voting on "Super Tuesday".
Interviews with more than two dozen voters in Texas suggest that Trump's anti-immigration platform - which includes building a Mexico-funded border wall and deporting millions of illegal immigrants - could present Cruz's biggest weakness against the real estate mogul.
The senator proposes similarly tough policies to prevent illegal immigration, but many Texans credit Trump with vaulting it to a top issue in the election, largely because of his tough, outraged tone rather than policy differences.
Trump has been honest enough to say what were all thinking but were all scared to say, said Sharon Neil, 68, of Fort Worth, who is voting for Trump.
Republicans in Texas, home to about 1.5 million undocumented immigrants, rank immigration the third most important problem facing the country, compared to seventh overall nationwide, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling.

Trump just needs to keep Cruz under 50% in Texas to force proportional allocation of delegates. However, a win would be good too.
notice how the media continues to just use the word ‘immigration’ as opposed to the truth, ILLEGAL immigration.......
At this point I am hoping Cruz gets Trumped and Rubio comes in fourth.
Cruz was trying to secure the borders when Trump was firing Dennis Rodman on the Apprentice.
I simply cannot fathom the enthusiasm for such an inferior, flawed, and derivative candidate. There is nothing that Trump can or would do that Ted Cruz would not do faster and better than Trump, if Trump really has any interest at all in doing the things he talks about.
What I find odd is the faith that some people have that Trump isn’t BSSing them off the face of the Earth, as is his natural skill set. He’s a kayfabe master; in the Hall of Fame, literally. There is no reason to believe a word out of his mouth, and plenty of cautionary evidence that he is totally lacking in sincerity.
Just a word of caution. You are about to be burned badly.
“Cruz was trying to secure the borders when Trump was firing Dennis Rodman on the Apprentice.”
Utter hogwash. Ted’s been exposed as just another ambitious lawyer who punched his meal ticket by going into politics.
Oh yes, now I remember, that’s when Cruz was busy writing up the TTP and TPA bills, and then the CFR bills along with the H1B visas, him and his little ‘Heidi’ were very busy people working behind our backs weren’t they!!!
“I simply cannot fathom the enthusiasm...”
And therein lies your problem.
“notice how the media continues to just use the word immigration as opposed to the truth, ILLEGAL immigration.......”
Of course, and the term ‘Trump’s immigration outrage’ is, frankly, outrageous. We are not obligated as a nation to commit national suicide in order to placate those who would criticize us for actually wanting to avoid rapid demographic shifts that put our way of life at risk. Yes, they are conflating illegal immigration as somehow equivalent to legal immigration, but even if we were talking about making changes and limiting legal immigration, that’s our prerogative as a sovereign nation.
Without borders and without restrictions on entry, there is no nation. When there is no sovereign nation like America, the places for the hurt and dispossessed to run to will have decreased dramatically. Not recognizing this is the inherent idiocy of the pseudo intellectual left. They are dangerous in their self righteous stupidity, and if left to their agenda unopposed they will be responsible for the suffering of untold numbers of innocents.
Only 1.5 million illegals in Texas? Hardly, it’s much larger than that.
Please tell me just what Cruz HAS actually DONE that will convince me that he WILL do any thing?
He seems to talk the talk but walk the walk...
Not so much.
Like the lawyer he is.
Hey, he worked for immigration reform to work against it.
And therein lies your problem.
The point being that the enthusiasm has no foundation in logic.
If anger over immigration is such a strictly conservative issue, why are so many leaving the Democrats to cross over for Trump.?
This is a bipartisan concern that has the potential to shatter both of the dinosaur parties.
Texan voting for Trump today.
Cruz passing out teddy bears and soccer balls to illegal alien leaches won’t help him much.
By passing out teddy bears to illegal aliens. See, that’s the problem. He says one thing and then does the opposite.
He has failed to secure the border.
I think Cruz will squeak it out but likely not 50%.
