In church on sundays in san Antonio, the bishops appeal runs yearly. It’s a complete embarrassment the kids have to see it. One year it was a 20 minute video, instead of prayer and Biblical reflection, hispanic men with their families begging for money. From the parishes. THey do not build their own churches where they can have their Mass in their language. They take over. move in. and have the church hierarchy beg for them.

I’m 68 and I’ve never seen a hispanic panhandle or beg for money. I’ve seen them beg for work. But then I live in Texas.

Panhandling, fundraising- I don’t see much difference except that one is virtual/ by phone & the other is physically right there, in your face. Actually, many panhandlers are less aggressive.
Oh, bull. On major thoroughfares in Los Angeles, they are all over the place selling near-dead flowers to motorists. Like the Hispanic squeegees at the tunnels in NYC, you have to roll up your window to avoid their begging. Ted doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Cruz is saying Hispanic culture values work. That’s true, in my over 60 years of experience. I worked downtown Chicago for many years and never saw any panhandlers but whites and blacks, along the route from union Station to the plaza with the Picasso.
So I don’t understand why so many FReepers are having such trouble understanding his point. It’s like they *want* to find evidence against him in everything he says. It’s irrational.
And of course he never said there are no Hispanic panhandlers. Only that in his own experience it never happened. Why is that controversial? I don’t get it.
BTW, I eventually did run across Hispanic panhandlers. It was in New Mexico. Four of them. I think it would have become a robbery if I had not signaled a strong willingness to resist at all costs. I was with my family, coming back from Disneyland.
But up till then, not one Hispanic, and all those I had known were indeed hard workers. I loved practicing my Spanish with them, all good people. Nothing wrong with Ted identifying them as his “community.” I identify with the Scottish, and the Swedish. I don’t agree with everything those cultures represent in the world today, but that’s where my roots are.
