OLIVER TOWNSHIP, MI â A wind turbine located in Huron County fell over during a winter storm that brought wind and heavy snow to much of the state, but the cause of the collapse is unclear.
The Exelon Corp. turbine is located near Gagetown and Richardson roads in Oliver Township, according to Huron County Central Dispatch.
Oliver Township Planning Commission Chairman Brion Dickens lives about a third of a mile from the damaged turbine.
"I'm not going to speculate. It was just a mechanical failure," he said Thursday, Feb. 25. "We don't know if it was weather related."
Dickens said the turbine is thought to have fallen over about 5 a.m. Thursday. The nearest home is about 2,200 feet away, he said.
"The zoning ordinance we have in place prevented anything from happening to anybody or anything," Dickens said.
"We're waiting for the turbine owner to get back with us to inform us of their plans," he added.
Kristen Otterness, communications manager for Exelon, sent the following statement to MLive via email Thursday afternoon:
"Early this morning, a wind turbine at Exelon's Harvest I wind project in Elkton, MI came down to the ground. There were no injuries to members of the public or employees.
The area around the turbine is roped off and has been put in a safe, secure condition. We're looking into the cause. We've notified the landowners and the sheriff's office."
That section of the wind park is to be shut down "until company officials can determine that the structural failure is isolated and it's safe to return other turbines back into service," according to a Huron County Sheriff's Office news release.
"Curious onlookers are advised not to enter any of the property near this incident, as it is private property. We have no further information about the incident other than company officials are on scene and actively dealing with this very rare incident," the release continues.
Dickens said the damage to the turbine appeared to be an isolated incident.
"I'm looking at probably 200 other ones that are working just fine," he said.
These damn eyesores are probably one of the biggest environmental scams in our history outside AGW. The green pukes choose to downplay and shush the fact around the amount of birds that die getting whacked by these monstrosities.
All fall down.
Ha ha!!! They just won’t listen to Newton’s 2nd law of Thermal Underwear!!!
Get caught shooting one endangered bird and go to prison.
Kill hundreds by “green” windmills and you’re a hero.
Nuts. These PC outrages can’t go on.
“The green pukes choose to downplay and shush the fact around the amount of birds that die getting whacked by these monstrosities.”
they filled the ocean with the damn things in the middle of one of the most important NE flyway imaginable, off of Cape Cod. The fishing boats can barely operate because of their fowled nets from the bird’s bodies. The vibration and the movement have scared many of the smaller schooling fish off, anyway. Stupid is just not strong enough a word.
But if we could just save one life, wouldn’t it be worth it to legislate all these monstrosities out of existence? (typical liberal, leftist, enviro-whacko response)
What’s the meaning of THAT???
” third of a mile “
< rant >There is no such measurement. Only 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/6 mile or multiples thereof. Anything less than 1/8 should be in feet unless you are at the horse track. < /rant >
“There is no such measurement. Only 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/6 mile or multiples thereof.
Really? Two times 1/6 is 1/3.
The cause is obvious: the usual futile, expensive vain do-gooderism.
I don’t know man, Texas recently had an overnight period where we produced more than what the grid consumed. Sure, it was the middle of the night, but this is Texas.
But then we have pretty much a solid wind farm that is about 200 miles long and probably 10 miles wide. From south of Abilene nearly all the way to Amarillo. I always wonder how many hawks they kill every year.
Polluting bird-killer.
GE, it brings good things to light! Or is that Mexico where all the jobs went?
Well Trump wants to subsidize wind power so.......
