Jeb Bush's Biggest Mistake
New York Magazine ^ | 2/22/16 | Ed Kilgore

Posted on 02/22/2016 11:09:43 AM PST by jimbo123

One byproduct of Jeb Bush's long, agonizing slide out of the 2016 presidential race is that, by the time he finally packed it in this weekend, plenty of postmortems had almost certainly been prewritten.

-snip-

as donor grumbling became loud enough to penetrate even the most insular campaign, the guy handling all of Jeb's money, Right to Rise super-pac director and alleged strategic genius Mike Murphy, granted an unusual two-part interview to Bloomberg's Sasha Issenberg. It was designed to shame into silence anyone who'd been stupid enough to pay attention to anything that had happened thus far. Murphy described Donald Trump as a "zombie front-runner" doomed to fade into irrelevance when voters tuned in, got their signals from elites, and thrilled to the rich symphony of Jeb's philosophy, record, biography, and electable message.

The irony, of course, is that by October of 2015 the term "zombie" best described the Bush campaign itself, pouring tens of millions of dollars a week into ads that did almost nothing.

His biggest mistake was running after Rubio’s amnesty bill died because we Cantorized our weasel.

That was supposed to get taken off the table first for Yeb! and his open borders stance to have a chance.

The citizens do not want to abandon the rule of law and surrender their country.

Unfortunately we have to fight both parties to stop them from giving it away.

The smart people around Jeb turned out to be arrogant, clueless and stupid.

They misread everything and their candidate was ill prepared to fight a tough campaign.

Politics ain’t beanbag.

To the incessantly cited examples of Rudy Giuliani in 2008 and Herman Cain in 2012 showing that early poll leads are meaningless, we can now add the counter-examples of Donald Trump and Jeb Bush in this cycle.

I forgot all about that. How many pro-Cruz FReepers cited Giuliani to me pre-Iowa? Many. They turned out to be completely wrong and as I told them at the time, you cant compare Giuliani to Trump going into Iowa because Giuliani didnt even go into Iowa and in fact banked on a Florida strategy.

Not important now, I know, but I forgot all about that until I just read this bit here.

Jeb’s biggest mistake was that in his desire to differentiate himself from the other candidates, he unapologetically slid to the left.

Not far left - but just far enough to the left to take himself out of consideration.

Likewise, he (IMHO) never seemed to act like his heart was really in his candidacy. At times, he seemed like he was going thru the motions.

His biggest mistake was being cheap with his staff but generous with his consultants. His team stopped working for him early on.

Another insider, RINO “genius” - spends gobs of money in a glossy media campaign - with zero results.

Its American government in a microcosm.

Jeb’s biggest mistake , Arrogance. Plain and simple. He wasn't expecting anyone from the beginning to be his opposition but Hillary. His polls turned downward steadily when Trump went to the border and steadily kept his focus steady on the bulls-eye, the weaklings that promote an act of love for illegals.

Jeb’s campaign was guided by a massive campaign plan backed by extensive survey and focus group data. Unfortunately for Jeb, he and his consultants neglected that pearl of wisdom offered by a noted practitioner of pugilism, Mike Tyson: “Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth.” Jeb never seemed to recover after his lack of readiness and energy were exposed in his first debate with Donald Trump.

El Chebbo's campaign was sunk before it sailed.

Here's what he said in 2014:

Bush believes that a presidential candidate who is "willing to lose the primary to win the general" has the best shot at the White House.

"I don't know if I'd be a good candidate or a bad one", Bush said at a Wall Street Journal CEO Council meeting on Monday evening in Washington, D.C. "I kinda know how a Republican can win, whether it's me or somebody else – and it has to be much more uplifting, much more positive, much more willing to be… ‘lose the primary to win the general’ without violating your principles. It's not an easy task, to be honest with you."

Well, he certainly accomplished Part A of that brilliant strategy.

Call it the Common Core version of political strategizing. It don't add up.

My first thoughts on his campaign is that he seemed to think he had some “Divine Right”.

IOWs, instead of pretending to be conservative and then going left he decided to go left right from the beginning.

Agree with you about that. Jeb failed by assuming he’ll handily take for granted we’ll take what they give us. Referring of course to the GOPe. Jeb was listening to politicians and his political pundits instead of what the people of this country wanted. His mistake and good riddance. Too bad Hillary cannot get the boot. Dems flock together no matter how corrupt their candidate is proved to be.
