Donald Trump's Perfect Foil: Jeb Bush

Donald Trump's Perfect Foil

How the real-estate mogul's attacks against Jeb Bush fueled his rise

Peter Beinart 9:19 AM ET

If Jeb Bush hadn’t run for president, Donald Trump would have had to invent him. The former Florida governor was Trump’s perfect foil. First, because Jeb was prim, proper, and incapable of expressing the rage—especially towards Muslims and Mexicans—that many Republicans currently feel. Second, because Jeb’s candidacy represented the reductio ad absurdum of the campaign finance corruption that Trump, alone among GOP candidates, calls out.

...snip...

In a searing column last week, the former Marine J.D. Vance, author of the forthcoming Hillbilly Elegy, recalls hearing Jeb saying his brother kept “us” safe:

I became Trump’s biggest fan. I wanted him to go for the jugular. I wanted him to inquire whom, precisely, George W. Bush had kept safe. Was it the veterans lingering in a bureaucratic quagmire at the Department of Veterans Affairs or the victims of 9/11? Was it the enlistees from my block back home, who signed their lives on the dotted line while Jeb’s brother told the country to “go shopping”—something kids like me couldn’t afford to do?

Why does that veteran who dares question the neocon legacy of the Bush Doctrine hate America?

I’ve often made the argument that Alinsky’s tactics work equally well regardless of ideology. Trump deployed Rule #5 to perfection against Jeb!

“Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” There is no defense. It’s irrational. It’s infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions.”

Trump may not be a disciple of Alinsky but he is a master negotiator and he knew how to target what was presented as the leading opponent and used nothing more than ridicule to bring him down. Masterfully done!

The talking heads still don't get it. In large part, America has figured it out. For the last quarter of a century, WE the Republic, have been denied the choice to say NO to socialism.

It has been a setup. The fix was always in. We, the Republic, have been loosing a war of financial attrition for decades. We, the Republic are engaged in a war with those who govern us. Drastic measures are required to defeat this enemy in order to stop the bleeding that each of us are seeing in the depreciation of our savings, the constant onslaught of taxes, fees, and licenses. Each of them designed to remove our ability to live free.

If a slave is a person who works for no money, then a paid person who works with no money left for savings or investment is therefore a slave.

The Communists are very good at planning each move, they have been at it for over sixty years, to bury us. They are so close to succeeding.

Trump has stepped in and has sensed our rage.We want to throw our shoes into the machinery. We want to turn over the apple carts and toss tea into the harbor. Trump is giving us a voice. He is giving our children and grandchildren a fighting chance of enjoying the life that our parents fought and spilled blood in Europe and Japan so as to impart liberty to ourselves.

No, we will no longer hide in the shadow of political correctness.

No, we will no longer stand idle in the face of the globalist Red Menace.

No, we will not play the game of choosing which Socialist will rob our children.

No, we will not play the game of choosing which Socialist will import an army of decapitating, lawless, savages into our home to eradicate Freedom and the American Way.

ANY and EVERY politician who will not build a wall is declaring he/she DOES NOT CARE IF YOU DIE!

I do not think Trump is a conservative.

I do not think Trump is morally pious and pure.

I do not think Trump is void of indiscretions or mistakes.

I do believe that any candidate that is a true conservative, morally pure, pious, and has walked the straight and narrow...would not stand a chance against the the globalist red menace that is systematically deconstructing our nation.

No, far from it.

Right now we need our own paladin of chaotic malice with a depraved sense of overly vengeful justice that will stand not for giving quarter. Right now we need our own Son of a Bitch glorious bastard, faults and all. We need to stomp out the treachery of political correctness that perpetuates racial discontent and has created Europe-istan, a Nuclear Iran, as well as ushering in a new world order of penniless servitude consisting of the entire earthly population bowing to but a few of the elite socialist megalomaniacs.

We need our own monster.

Ted Cruz may well be as advertised. No one knows. Four years ago, no one knew who he was.

He is young, deploy the Trump Bomb now, it is an ugly weapon of mass destruction that will result in some collateral damage, but it is required.

Alas, we have run out of time.

It will take many Ted Cruz clones to restore order in the aftermath.

e isn’t “politically correct.” In the professional conservative world, “political correctness” is confined to the left. But for Trump’s supporters, who are less doctrinaire, it means something broader. It refers to the things that elites won’t admit but “ordinary people” (or at least the “ordinary people” who like Trump) know are true. Liberal elites may try to conceal some of these “truths”: Mexican immigrants are wrecking the country; Muslim immigrants are potential terrorists. But conservative elites conceal others: Trade deals destroy American jobs; big donations don’t affect government policy.

This needs to be repeated. The GOP establishment has its own political correctness and its own sacred cows just as the Decmorats have theirs. In fact, the two are increasingly overlapping now that establishment Republicans are in love with all things Mexican while Clinton Democrats are on the same page as Bush Republicans in Middle East nation-building.

I don/t think Jeb has it in him to clash w/ the elder Bushes.

Yet, he might remind them he heard them over and over again, bashing, demeaning and deploring Republican conservatives.

Which made Jeb say he didn/t need us to win....the death knell for his ambitions.

Why does that veteran who dares question the neocon legacy of the Bush Doctrine hate America?

LOL. Twelve years ago the Bush administration and its fans could silence debate and prevent any and all scrutiny of their foreign and domestic policy by tarring critics as "Unpatriotic America-haters," which isn't so different a method from how the Obamaites silence dissent by calling his opponents "racists". Luckily people are waking up and aren't falling for either.

I recall on talk radio or on FOX a Bush supporter defending the Iraq was claimed that anyone who said Iraqis did not want Democracy was being racists against Arabs.

Anyone who claims that a ballot box will erase centuries of tribal and sectarian conflict rather than exacerbating them is either incredibly naive or an incredible liar.

The Iraq war was a convenient distraction from the fact that Saudi clerics were and remain the biggest sponsors of extreme Islamism and jihad around the world, and the fact that the Bushes have been tight with the Saudi rulers for decades.

What a coincidence! Bush didn't spend all that money going after Trump, and there is a video of Trump on FR in 1988 talking about how he is staying with the Bushes!

Jeb took one for the team!
