Marco Rubio Wins Zero Delegates in South Carolina

Despite the high profile endorsement from popular Gov. Nikki Haley, Marco Rubio disappointed in the South Carolina Republican primary on Saturday. He managed to eke by rival Ted Cruz for a second place finish, but no one in the Republican race could catch Donald Trump on delegates. Rubio, along with the rest of his GOP compatriots, took home zero delegates at the end of the day in the Palmetto State, due to South Carolina’s unusual system for awarding delegates.

The South Carolina Republican primary utilizes a winner-take-most system that awards delegates on a statewide and congressional district basis. In the statewide election, which Trump won handily with a 10 point margin, 29 delegates are given to the winner of the popular vote. The remaining 21 delegates are awarded to the winners of each of South Carolina’s seven congressional districts — three delegates for each district. Trump also won each of those seven districts, and therefore took all the delegates up for grabs.

No Republican candidate has ever won all the delegates in the primary since South Carolina switched to the current system for the 2000 election. By all predictions, Rubio should have gotten a least a couple delegates as the first runner up, but the unprecedented domination from Team Trump kept Rubio and all the other contenders at a goose egg.

Rubio and Cruz were separated by less than 1,000 votes in a state of more than four million people. That’s essentially a tie for second place.

popular Gov. Nikki Haley

Hard to believe she's popular in SC. She's another Tea Party turncoat like Rubio.

But then, SC keeps re-electing Graham, so go figure.

Nikki Haley and Trey Gowdy and all the King's Horses could get Marco a single delegate

Both Nikki and Trey I promised the house and moon on Benghazi Gowdy will take a Hit personally.

Now he has Mitt Obamacare part 1 as an endorsement, I sure Rush is on board with that True Conservative.

...and a tie in delegates...much more important than a 0.02% difference in vote count...

Rush doesn’t think Gang of 8 is a big deal. He downplays it as “a problem here or there,” “no candidate is perfect.”

That really surprised me about Rush.

At least Levin sees it for what it is — huge.

They’re all turncoats, because they all have to beg for millions of dollars in order to get elected. Then they get elected, and the quid pro quo kicks in.

The only difference is that some turncoats are better at explaining their betrayals away than others. But on a long enough timeline, they all get outed eventually.

I was wondering when coming in second place, like rubio did, meant that person was the winner...

Cruz is also wider support.

Treat every county in South Carolina like every county from Wyoming to Florida Cruz has more wide support than Rubio.

Trump calling their senator Lindsay a nut I thought for sure would be some blowback. Haha, LG might want to bow out the next election cycle and save himself a little embarrassment. Think the voters are done with him now.
