NATO Refuses to Support Turkey in the Event of a Conflict With Russia
Fort Russ ^ | February 19, 2016 | Izvestia

Posted on 02/19/2016 8:42:35 PM PST by marvel5

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn, said today that NATO allies will not support Turkey in case of a conflict with Russia, according to Der Spiegel.

According to Asselborn, the country of the North Atlantic Alliance does not intend to participate in an escalation in the conflict between Russia and Turkey. The Foreign Minister of Luxembourg underlined that the authorities of all state-members of NATO have a common stance on this issue.

"The Alliance should not be drawn into the escalating conflict between Turkey and Russia. The NATO Charter that guarantees mutual defense applies only in the case of an open attack," said Asselborn.

As a reminder, relations between the two countries are experiencing a crisis after the Turkish military shot down a Russian su-24 that was in Syria. Ankara stated that the aircraft allegedly crossed the border but did not provide evidence. The radar system of the Ministry of Defence and the government army of Syria documented that the su-24 was in Syria at the time of the attack.

Right. We saw that one coming when Turkey was brought into NATO.

Next, are the Baltic States ready to be thrown under the bus?

Next, are the Baltic States ready to be thrown under the bus?

Are any of them allied surreptiously with an Islamic caliphate ?

NATO refuses to support Islam against Russia.

Makes sense to me.

If this is true, Turkey may start behaving even more radically.

They're crazy anyway but this may pus Erdogan over the top.

Be sniffing for coup in Turkey.

Actually, I believe it is centered in Belgrade.

What difference does it make- they are simply quoting a NATO diplomat?

Misleading title. Entirely too common.

It is Luxemberg, NOT all of NATO that object to backing fellow NATO member Turkey at this time.

It might well come to that, but for now it is just Lux.

You are referring to the ambush of the Russian jet engaged in anti-terrorist operations in Syria that, at best, was in Syrian airspace for 17 seconds?

Turkey constantly violates Greek airspace.

Before the Russian intervention, Turkey bombed inside Turkey in support of the jihadis and it is now shelling Syrian territory from Turkey and funneling hundreds of new jihadi fighters into Syria.

That is to say in Turkish, not Syrian airspace.

Excellent.
Constantinople.
Payback for Turkey’s response to 2002. They did not want to support the US nor even allow flyovers during the Iraq war.
Now, they think we should back their folly.

Guess again Erdogan.
I would very much like to visit Constantinople. I’ve been disappointed on two trips to Istanbul... I think Constantinople might be better...
