Rumors are that the chain will be filing for bankruptcy soon. The one here seemed so specialize in clothing and team sports. They couldn't compete with the more broadly stocked nearby established Academy.

Just another beneficiary of the Obama economic boom.

I remember people saying Mitt “saved” Sports Authority by loading them with debt that would come back to haunt them.

Boo!

I agree part of this is the bad economy in general, but they are definitely casualties of the transition to online shopping. How many times would fight for a parking spot in a crowded lot just to find the store wasn’t carrying something rather basic?

I know the answer: Once.

Crowded parking lots didn’t seem to be a problem the two times I went to Sports Authority. Some overflow from the adjacent pet store.

Sports Authority used to be a good place to get mid range fishing tackle, a step above Walmart. But for some reason they stopped selling fishing tackle and that’s when I stopped going to them.

The large Sports Authority store in Fairbanks is NEVER busy. And I mean NEVER! The parlking lot is like a ghost town. I don’t know how they have lasted as long as they have so far.

That’s right; even worse, people go into a store, find exactly what they need...and leave and order it online for less money.

The problem isn’t THEIR customers at the store near me; it is the customers for the movie theater, the Barnes & Noble, the Party City, etc.

To an extent. But look at the size of those big stores and compare the overhead costs to warehouse operations like Amazon.

Not easy to compete on price.

But I don’t want to buy sports shoes, gloves, even a bat without holding it.

I agree that amazon is a tough competitor, though. I live out in the country and it saves me gas money.

I learned my lesson with clothing, though. I’ve NEVER had it fit right. Ever.
