China is furious about a bill introduced by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and passed in the Senate unanimously on Friday that would rename the plaza in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington after a Nobel Peace Prize winner who is currently jailed in the nation.
"If the relevant bill is passed into law, it will cause serious consequences," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a news conference, The Washington Post reported. "We demand the US Senate stop promoting the bill and hope the US executive authorities put an end to this political farce."
He added the bill was "contrary to the basic norms" of international relations.
On Tuesday, the Obama administration said the president would veto the proposal to name the short stretch of street in front of the embassy after Liu Xiaobo, who was sentenced to 11 years in jail for inciting state subversion, per the Post.
Xiaobo's offense was organizing a petition in 2008 that called for the end of one-party rule in China. Two years later, after he had been imprisoned, he won the Nobel Peace Prize....

Obama will veto a bill passed unanimously in the senate?
I thought that was called bi-partisanship?
Yes, that is coming to grips with the truly critical issues.
Big deal. Doesn’t affect the 100 million unemployed or 50 million on food stamps.
Rafael will be changing street signs and renaming post offices. How about a post office named for Kasich’s Father.
Reminds me of the term “kow tow”.
Donald Trump attacked the law that bans American companies bribing foreign officials on Tuesday

China should retaliate by naming the area in front of the U.S. Embassy after an anti-American activist. Perhaps Baraq Obama Square.
This is just another sleazy attack by Ted Cruz to insult Trump’s clothing line that is made in China.
Lawsuit to follow.
: )
Does he ever do anything more than words? He couldn’t find the time to locate a manufacturer in the United States for his clothes.
“Enraged” is probably a bit strong.
waah
While fine in theory why are we naming anything in this country, much less our capital, after foreigners?
in our capital
Obama will veto a bill naming a street after a Nobel Peace Prize winner.
I know, I know. You are so right. Only the Donald is allowed to criticize Chy-na (doing so about "trade" and "imports").
And only those who are approved of by a Nobel Peace Prize winner (visualize whirled peas) are allowed to point towards any world government's record of human rights abuses ---'specially if doing so might remind everybody about Chy'na's recent history (and still ongoing hang-over) of totalitarianism.
Who needs more the one Party anyway? Not the Rooskies, not the Chinese, and certainly not the American Donkey party either. Just ask any of 'em. They'll tell you.
Elections have consequences.
We had to go sit towards the back of the bus ---a Nobel Peace Prize awardee told us soon after he won presidential office.
Our present-day bus driver (he won a Nobel Prize that guy did!) will just have to put little Teddy in his place...we can't be allowing just anyone to go on record as making symbolic gesture in regards to Chy'na's sorry human rights record. Or horrific environmental pollution That's only allowed for donkey party candidates (and PBS) you know, the Party which long had Bill Clinton as figurehead and president, who widened trade relations with Chy'na almost wide freaking open.
They were so thankful for all the technology and information they were able to [cough-cough] acquire, they donated (Big Time) to Billy Jeff's reelection to office. Without their help, he probably wouldn't have made it...
If he hadn't, Trump maybe wouldn't have anyone to make those Make America Great Again hats for his electoral campaign to pass around.
Little Teddy simply must be put in his place. He has no standing to mess around with how billionaires go about their business...
Our current (Nobel Prize winning) bus driver is going to have to shout little Teddy down. He's just the guy to do it. Son of a Kenyan and all. Has "authority" when it comes to moral issues pertaining to people of darker-than-white-people skin color. There is no present higher authority in this, than the present-day bus driver. That guy won a Nobel Prize, he did.
: )
bttt
I wonder how long before a certain primary opponent attacks Cruz for being nasty and rude to China while promising he’ll get along great with China and their amazing strong leaders.
Nero fiddled, the US Senate diddled.
I did have great hopes for Cruz.....
We have a few agenda items more important than this that need to be addressed immediately.

This is just more insider Shell Game bullshit.
Another waste of time and effort.
This kind of meaningless grandstanding is why many reasonable citizens HATE POLITICIANS GUTS!
Why not pass a bill that approves of apple pie and motherhood?
