George W. Bush inherited 'crumbling' intel community from Bill Clinton: Tenet

GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump blames Bush for failing to stop 9/11 attacks

As Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump hammers away at former President George W. Bush for not stopping the September 11 attacks, another factor could be added to the debate: Mr. Bush inherited from Bill Clinton an intelligence community in terrible shape.

This fact comes not from a Republican partisan but from George Tenet, President Clinton's CIA director, a post that at the time made him the country's top intelligence officer.

Mr. Tenet wrote in his memoirs, "At the Center of the Storm," that Mr. Clinton left Mr. Bush with a CIA that was in "Chapter 11." The eavesdropping National Security Agency was "crumbling" and "going deaf," he said.

It is one explanation for why the intelligence community failed to discover and stop the September 11 plot.

Mr. Clinton is an integral part of Hillary Clinton's Democratic presidential campaign. The record shows that, as commander in chief, he shrunk the CIA at the very time al Qaeda was expanding.

On his watch, the Osama bin Laden terror group declared war on the U.S. and carried out the first World Trade Center attack, as well as the bombings of a destroyer and two American embassies in Africa.

“I’m sure all that is true, but I remember hearing about many insiders being aware of clear and present threats on the mainland being discussed for months beforehand. Any new admin has to take that stuff seriously. I haven’t seen any evidence that the new guys did take it seriously, rather they seemed to regard this intel suspiciously.”

I’m curious. Exactly what should the new administration have done that would have stopped those attacks? Be specific. Do you think they should have stopped all air travel?

I remember Clinton using highly sophiscated spy satellites to monitor the rain forest and the Amazon. Instead of the purposes

And he had nine months to do something about it. That’s a whole fifth of a term. A lot can get done in nine months.

Dubya was too busy pushing the drug prescription plan and no child left behind.

This is pretty obvious, but seems to have eluded Donald Trump. Any President inherits a lot. It takes time to install your own people. It takes time to implement economic policy, increase defense spending, etc. The first year belongs to the prior President and Congress.

Bush was behind the usual schedule because he had the distraction of fending off Gore’s attempt to steal the election. Bush wanted to be the “education President.” That wouldn’t have been my choice, but many thought it OK.

Shortly after 9/11, the Democrat position was “now is not the time to cast blame.” The reason is that Americans would likely blame Clinton and the Democrats. Clinton should have made the US safe for the next President, as Bush made the US safe the next President.

I fear that Obama has facilitated Muslim sleeper cells in the US. If a Republican is elected (maybe even a Democrat) there may be a lot attacks in 2017. Whose fault? Mostly Obama’s.

What does anyone think Bubba was focusing on during his second term - fighting impeachment or thwarting Islamic terrorists?”

Bill probably would have welcomed Sharia law. It would make legal his penchant for young girls. He probably thought to hell with Hill and the spawn since he would get what he wanted.

Yeah, heard about her. Seems the whole Clinton clan was responsible since those guys were here for five years before they crashed the planes into the WTF. That’s when I really learned about Islam.

Because he still is a democrat, and the trumpets are falling for him

Did the August alert give the exact times and places where the attacks were going to happen? No it did not.

Should President Bush have shut down ever airport in the country and for how long?

I used to remember a phrase that went, “Fix the problem, not the blame.”

That doesn’t work in the USA any more. Everyone enjoys pointing fingers.

We are so fascinated by tearing everyone down that we don’t see the a-holes we have become.

This article is about as relevant to Millenials as fixing blame for the sinking of the Maine.

He was offered Bin Laden numerous times on a silver platter, but he ignored it because he had “better” things to do as keeping the country save.
