Hillary Clinton, if president, could appoint 4 Supreme Court justices [11-12-15]

Hillary Clinton, if president, could appoint 4 Supreme Court justices

By Dave Boyer - The Washington Times - Thursday, November 12, 2015

Conservatives unhappy with U.S. Supreme Court rulings on same-sex marriage and Obamacare heard a powerful argument Thursday for defeating Hillary Rodham Clinton: The next president could appoint as many as four justices.

When the next president takes the oath of office in January 2017, three current justices will be at least 80 years old: conservative Antonin Scalia (80), swing voter Anthony M. Kennedy (80) and liberal Ruth Bader Ginsburg (83). Liberal Justice Stephen G. Breyer will be 78.

During a Federalist Society discussion on the first 10 years of the court under Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., lawyer Michael Carvin said the Supreme Court has made "baby steps toward the return to the rule of law" in the past decade, despite dissatisfaction by many conservatives.

"If the election goes wrong next year, none of that will matter and we will all descend into a hellish existence from which we will never emerge," Mr. Carvin said to laughter from the crowd.

Mr. Carvin was the plaintiffs' lead attorney in challenging the Affordable Care Act in King v. Burwell, in which the court upheld Obamacare subsidies.

Michael Paulsen, a professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, said the next president will have an opportunity to institute "meaningful changes" on the court.

"Ideology matters," Mr. Paulsen said. "Judicial philosophy matters. Sometimes it's literally a matter of life and death who you appoint to the Supreme Court."

Willard “Mitt” Romney was unpopular with conservative voters. But the nation’s peril would be less today if a republican, even Romney, was appointing Scalia’s successor.

NRA to spend ‘significantly more’ fighting Clinton/Sanders, over $20M
By Paul Bedard 2/7/16

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Supporters of the Second Amendment are declaring the 2016 the most critical to their rights because it is likely that the next president will appoint four new U.S. Supreme Court justices, warned the president of the National Rifle Association.

“In my view, all the chips are on the table in this election because the impact is who gets the Supreme Court,” said the NRA’s chief, Allan D. Cors.

Cors, in an interview with Secrets on the opening day of the annual Great American Outdoor Show here, the nation’s biggest, described Democratic frontrunner Hillary Rodham Clinton as passionately anti-gun and ready to change the makeup of the court and unleash the Justice Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on gun owners and limit imports through State Department rules.

“All of these things fall with whoever is president,” said Cors.

Constitution Check: Will a Sanders “political revolution” overthrow Citizens United?

February 11, 2016 by Lyle Denniston

Lyle Denniston, the National Constitution Center’s constitutional literacy adviser, looks at Bernie Sanders’s desire to banish the Citizens United decision, and the constitutional barriers in the way.

(credit: Alex Hanson)

THE STATEMENT AT ISSUE:

“What began last week in Iowa, [and] voters here in New Hampshire confirmed tonight, is nothing short of the beginning of a political revolution. It is a political revolution that will bring tens of millions of our people together. It will bring together working people, who have given up on the political process. It will bring together young people who have never participated in the political process. It will bring together blacks and whites, Latinos, Asian-Americans, Native Americans, straight and gay, males and female, people who were born in America and people who immigrated here. We will all come together to say loudly and clearly that the government of our great nation belongs to all of you, not just a few wealthy campaign contributors.”

Because of the sad news of Antonin Scalia’s death, the next President may have a maximum of 3 choices for the Court. Obama will be able to pick a young radical leftist to replace Scalia, meaning that the Left will have a 5-4 majority on all important decisions at least until Ginsberg dies or retires. All Obama has to do is pick a black, Hispanic, Asian, Muslim, or gay (or some combination thereof) nominee and the Republicans will cave in and confirm the nomination.

So could Trump! He may even appoint Hillary based on the money he’s given her!

No, Holder is too old.

Anyway, Obama will likely pick a female. Kamala Harris from California has been mentioned in the past--she is part Asian and part black, I think, so she would sail through.

Well, look at the bright side. Once the Clintons have been bought, they stay bought.

I sure hope that if Cruz doesn’t get the nomination, that Hillary gets the presidency.

We sure don’t want Trump picking judges!

Who is on the U.S. Supreme Court - If you believe 10 percent of those who responded, it’s TV’s “Judge Judy.” Judith Sheindlin, who presides over the daytime courtroom series “Judge Judy,” was believed to be a justice on the nation’s highest court by one out of every 10 people asked.
