Almost every top official in a remote South Texas city was arrested on Thursday under a detailed federal indictment that accuses them of taking bribes from contractors and sending city workers to help an illegal gambling operator nicknamed Mr T.

Crystal City's mayor, city manager, mayor pro tempore, one of three current councilmen and a former councilman were all arrested under an indictment obtained by the U.S. attorney's office in San Antonio, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney said.

A second councilman is already charged in a separate case with smuggling Mexican immigrants.

That leaves just one councilman not facing federal charges in Crystal City, a town of about 7,100 people about 50 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

The small South Texas town I live in was taken over by the LaRaza union organizers a few years back when the tax paying citizens both Anglo and Hispanic went to sleep and didn't turn out to vote.

What a mess they made before a recall election could be held. Turned a city surplus into a one million dollar debt in less than a year with all their give-aways to the getto dwellers. The police dept. couldn't even afford gasoline for the patrol cars. Took a while to get everything fiscally straightened out.

I'm also slightly curious as to the political affiliation of the accused perps, but not so much as to do the research on it.

So I'm just gonna go ahead and presume that they were all registered Democrats. That's kind of my default when I hear about political corruption cases.

It is 50 miles from the Mexican border in South Texas, Dave.

If you have ever been down there and been involved with the people down there, the mescans vote 100% democrat (but do not know why) and always vote their relatives in.

I am a 4 hour drive from the border and am in the same district for my DC rep. Ain't that screwed up, right?
