In 2004 Santorum endorsed pro abortion Arlen Spectre over pro life Pat Toomey.
I think it is because he knew Toomey was for immigration, gays in the military and gun control. He took the least worse which was Spectre who was unfortunately pro choice. Not much of a choice really with either one.
