was like that when I served too.
Russia back then in the early 90’s could easily have swept across Europe and we were always told this.
Hell half of our vehicles were waiting for spare parts.

When I was active duty in the early 1980's, we were training to use terrain to best advantage. The idea that the Fulda Gap would provide a choke point was heavily favored. But it was also a numbers game and they outnumbered us in tanks like four to one. But the Abrams was and is just about the best tank on the battlefield, so I'd discount that to a degree. We also trained very heavily against the chemical threat. There was little doubt that the USSR would use Nerve Agents if we went "Hot." Any way you look at this, especially in today's environment, it is a dicey proposition.
