Excuse me, everybody thought John Roberts was the greatest selection for that position possible. There were NO dissenting votes from any conservative leaders.

He fooled everybody. Cruz could no more see into his heart than you or I could. And everything Roberts had did or written pointed to exactly what all the conservatives wanted on the Supreme Court.

I still think they have something on Robert’s kids and/or the adoption and are using it to blackmail him.

I wonder if there was a halo effect from Cruz that precluded a lot of digging. Everybody just believed in St. Ted (and St. Roberts).

But people are not static entities. They change either to worse or better. We’d like to see why and how a future court candidate got where he or she is, and what else that candidate has been involved with and why.

Ann Coulter was against Roberts at the time (2005):

" But unfortunately, other than that that, we don't know much about John Roberts. Stealth nominees have never turned out to be a pleasant surprise for conservatives. Never. Not ever. "

I did not trust the guy then either, but have no proof except my own memory.

Either that or someone made a credible threat of driving him or his family to an obscure park...

Evidently you never read Ann Coulter’s 2005 column which was critical of the Roberts nomination.

Yeah, we know that. We’re trying to rationalize our support for Trump here though, so please stop with the logic and reason. Thanks.

Agree with you totally Roberts fooled everyone, and his record is mostly bad because of his terrible Obamacare flip flops.

But I knew Roberts was an elitist schmuck, his whole life was clerking for Rehnquist and then a big law firm. It made me sick when conservatives spoke of his “courage”as if he were a war hero.

Cruz vouched for Roberts in the 2000 recount as well as for SCOTUS, calling Roberts his “mentor and friend”...

these are enormous endorsements. Cruz lacks discernment.

Exactly. Thank you for a rare moment of common sense and intelligence on free republic this year. I had no idea we were surrounded by such pettiness and ignorance. The cult worship is scary to watch.

Exactly. This forum has become corrupt. There is nothing wrong with what Cruz was saying then or now. Roberts was not Ted’s first choice but he was a very good choice at the time and there was nobody standing against the nomination.

Yup. There was a lot of support for Roberts right here on FR as well. I think your last statement is the real problem with Roberts. it's something that most folks wouldn't have had any insight to. Keep in mind as well that Souter is a Reagan appointee.

We get our opinions from politicians we trust. Cruz and Roberts both clerked for Chief Justice Rehnquist. Ted Cruz called John Roberts "brilliant" and "a principled conservative" who could be trusted to faithfully observe the Constitution.

Cruz = epic fail!

Trust factor zero mister Cruz.
