Trump Slams Evangelical Leader Vander Plaats on Twitter
Newsmax ^ | Sunday, 31 Jan 2016 | Greg Richter

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump unleashed a slew of Twitter attacks on Iowa evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats Sunday morning, the second time he has done so in less than a week.

Trump says that Vander Plaats, head of the Iowa-based Family Leader, asked him to stay in his hotels for free and also requested he speak at an event while seeking $100,000 for himself.

He made the same statements on Tuesday in a similar Twitter storm. At that time, Vander Plaats said he and his family stayed for free in Trump's hotels because Trump insisted he do so in hopes of getting his endorsement. When Vander Plaats instead backed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Trump attacked, Vander Plaats said.

As to Trump's claim that Vander Plaats sought $100,000 for himself, the Des Moines Register's chief political reporter Jennifer Jacobs contacted the group to whom Trump spoke.

The paper found that Trump was paid $100,000 to speak at Iowa's Land Investment Expo a year ago, directly contradicting Trump’s claim.

While the speech was Vander Plaats' idea, he was paid nothing, records showed.

There was no indication why Trump chose Sunday morning to reignite his Vander Plaats attacks, but caucusing is set for the Hawkeye State Monday night. Trump is in the lead in the latest polls, but Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is nipping at his heels.

Vander Plaats also replied to Trump on Sunday, saying his endorsement can't be bought.

Yeah I see it that way also.

I guess what I’m getting at is that he can’t gain anything by unleashing this twitter storm right now, when he’s in a tight race and competing for the Evangelical vote. And yet he did it anyway. I’m no psychologist but it says to me that he can’t control this tendency, and he would actually rather lash out than win.

“If I was Vander Platts, I would figure out a way to get Trump his money and tell him to shove it.”

Oh, I think Vander Plaats is mad that he got exposed monetizing his relationship with God for the benefit of himself and his family to his followers. There are probably some folks that aren’t happy about that. You seem to want to blame Trump for the character flaws of Vander Plaats.

YOU HAVE HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD — almost unbelievably. I live in California and what happened here in 2003 is being played out alarmingly and badly on the national level today. The Democrat Gov., Gray Davis, had played quid pro quo, trading financial donations for favors, and wrecked California tremendously. The people were furious — and launched the first successful gubernatorial recall in California history. We had a spectacular conservative (Tom McClintock) who could have won the governor’s race. I worked my heart out for him and made the biggest political donations I’ve ever made. The establishment and many Republicans went with the progressive, the liberal, the loser (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who was a disaster as governor, enacted climate change laws and did almost nothing good. They said that only Arnold could win. NOW THIS SCENARIO is being repeated on the national level. We have a progressive (Donald Trump) and we have a conservative (Ted Cruz) and with people furious at what Obama’s done, the same type of Republicans who sided with Arnold in California, are pulling the same stupidity on the national scale. Instead of a tried and true conservative let’s go with the man who has been a Democrat most of his life. I have a Marine friend who supported Arnold and we fought over the governor’s race. He apologized to me a few years ago and said I was right about Arnold. He is a man. Hopefully the people of this website who support the progressive will wise up before we all suffer from the national scale Arnold. Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat. YUCK!!!

Trump was trying to buy Vander Platts endorsement and it wasn’t up for sale, so Trump has been trying to trash him; just like Trump does with everyone else who doesn’t kiss his ass.

Thank you for the applause. See post #104. Many people on this website are absolutely convinced that Trump wins Iowa and wins the nomination. After seven years of garbage from Obama, I’m not rolling over for Trump. I am talking to every Christian I can, telling them that Trump is a man of dubious moral character and that we all need to pray to derail his candidacy.

Trump all but forced it on him because Trump was trying to buy an endorsement from Vander Platts.

Contrary to what you think, it is proof that Vander Platts endorsement was not for sale. Trump did not make the deal, and that is what really pisses Trump off.

but it was Trump that provided the 'favors' and the expectation of quid qo pro

When he bought politicians for all those years to "do business", was he expecting nothing in return? When he admits to being on the buying end of numerous sleazy political deals, why would you expect him to "clean up" these political deals when he takes a position on the selling side?

“Trump was trying to buy Vander Platts endorsement and it wasn’t up for sale”

I think, perhaps you exaggerate the virtue of Vander Plaats. If he stayed in the local Motel 6, you might have a point. He didn’t do that, did he? Only now that he has been exposed does he acknowledge his willingness to trade on his relationship with God for luxury hotel accommodations for himself and his family.

Time to accept that your guy is not quite the caliber of leader for a moose lodge, much less an Evangelical group.

Thanks for your post. PLEASE repost information like this, if you have the time. Donald Trump is the Arnold Schwarzenegger of 2016 and Ted Cruz is the Tom McClintock 2016, with Barack Obama as the Gray Davis 2016. It is too much to believe.

“Trump all but forced it on him because Trump was trying to buy an endorsement from Vander Platts.”

Ah so Vander Plaats was merely exhibiting true Christian principles by accepting free luxury accommodations for himself and his family. You should search elsewhere for such virtue.

“I bet Vander Plaats regrets ever meeting/talking to Trump.”

....now that he’s been exposed accepting free luxury accommodations, yes. But if it is wrong now, it was wrong then.

You are giving the ol boy a pass and ought not do so

This is very normal.”

So Vander Plaats is shaking you down, too?

Trump’s the who said he’s a great Christian & waved the bible around. Don’t be upset when his actions are examined based on his claim.
